This company is winning the race to create the first factory in space

The international space station is getting a software update, and its future iteration is not just a space station – it’s a space factory. Axiom Space is launching the first commercial space station in the next few years, which will open the door to a new era in the space economy.  To become the first commercial space station, Axiom has had to rethink everything about how we live in space. We got a tour of the space station development facility, which is … inside an abandoned retail store? Axioms’s approach might seem scrappy, but these unassuming ingredients are coming together…

Towards a theory of learning dynamics in deep state space models

Towards a theory of learning dynamics in deep state space models

arXiv:2407.07279v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: State space models (SSMs) have shown remarkable empirical performance on many long sequence modeling tasks, but a theoretical understanding of these models is still lacking. In this work, we study the learning dynamics of linear SSMs to understand how covariance structure in data, latent state size, and initialization affect the evolution of parameters throughout learning with gradient descent. We show that focusing on the learning dynamics in the frequency domain affords analytical solutions under mild assumptions, and we establish a link between one-dimensional SSMs and the dynamics of deep linear feed-forward networks. Finally, we analyze…

10-30% of today’s research is written by AI

10-30% of today’s research is written by AI

“Frequencies of PubMed abstracts containing certain words.”ChatGPT has transformed scientific writing more rapidly than any event in recent history, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This post examines a study quantifying ChatGPT's impact on academic publishing by analyzing millions of research abstracts. It turns out that a huge percentage of new research papers contains telltale signs of AI-assisted writing. Let’s take a look at the study in question and see how the researchers quantified this phenomenon and what it might mean for the future of science!Get summaries of the top trending papers on your AImodels.fyi dashboard.By the way, I only heard about this…

AI supercharges data center energy use – straining the grid and slowing sustainability efforts

AI supercharges data center energy use – straining the grid and slowing sustainability efforts

The artificial intelligence boom has had such a profound effect on big tech companies that their energy consumption, and with it their carbon emissions, have surged. The spectacular success of large language models such as ChatGPT has helped fuel this growth in energy demand. At 2.9 watt-hours per ChatGPT request, AI queries require about 10 times the electricity of traditional Google queries, according to the Electric Power Research Institute, a nonprofit research firm. Emerging AI capabilities such as audio and video generation are likely to add to this energy demand. The energy needs of AI are shifting the calculus of…

What US sub-hunter planes can learn watching advanced Russian submarines like the one that showed up near Florida

Russian submarines have surfaced on the doorsteps of the US and other NATO allies in recent weeks. Though not particularly alarming, anti-submarine warfare planes were dispatched to keep tabs on them.Shadowing the submarines offers a chance to gather data on the vessels, giving the US and its allies a better understanding of how to identify and track them.Data collected recently could be useful in particular for understanding more about the acoustic profile of submarines like the Kazan, one of a relatively new class of stealthy strike submarines that has long concerned US and Western militaries. The Kazan, a Russian nuclear-powered cruise…

Tracing Back the Malicious Clients in Poisoning Attacks to Federated Learning

Tracing Back the Malicious Clients in Poisoning Attacks to Federated Learning

arXiv:2407.07221v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Poisoning attacks compromise the training phase of federated learning (FL) such that the learned global model misclassifies attacker-chosen inputs called target inputs. Existing defenses mainly focus on protecting the training phase of FL such that the learnt global model is poison free. However, these defenses often achieve limited effectiveness when the clients' local training data is highly non-iid or the number of malicious clients is large, as confirmed in our experiments. In this work, we propose FLForensics, the first poison-forensics method for FL. FLForensics complements existing training-phase defenses. In particular, when training-phase defenses fail and…

The best laptop power banks for 2024

The best laptop power banks for 2024

Taking care of business doesn’t always happen within range of an outlet. Traveling, working off-site and decamping to a coffee shop are all situations where a laptop power bank could come in handy. These high-capacity batteries can recharge your devices — from tiny earbuds to power-hungry laptops — and can even top off more than one at a time. There aren’t quite as many laptop power banks on the market as there are standard portable chargers, but you’ll still find a fair number to consider. I tested out a handful and can recommend three that cover different needs when you’re…
