Activeloop raises $11M to grow its specialized tensor database for AI training and inference – SiliconANGLE

Activeloop, creator of a database platform that’s designed to cater specifically to artificial intelligence workloads, said today it has closed on an $11 million early-stage funding round, bringing its total amount raised to about $20 million. Today’s Series A round was led by Streamlined Ventures and saw participation from Y Combinator, Samsung Next, Alumni Ventures and Dispersion Capital, the company said. The startup, which is officially known as Snark AI Inc., has created a specialized database called Deep Lake that’s designed to streamline the flow of unstructured information, such as audio, video, image, text files and embeddings, into machine learning…

Automatic Coral Detection with YOLO: A Deep Learning Approach for Efficient and Accurate Coral Reef Monitoring

Automatic Coral Detection with YOLO: A Deep Learning Approach for Efficient and Accurate Coral Reef Monitoring

arXiv:2405.14879v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Coral reefs are vital ecosystems that are under increasing threat due to local human impacts and climate change. Efficient and accurate monitoring of coral reefs is crucial for their conservation and management. In this paper, we present an automatic coral detection system utilizing the You Only Look Once (YOLO) deep learning model, which is specifically tailored for underwater imagery analysis. To train and evaluate our system, we employ a dataset consisting of 400 original underwater images. We increased the number of annotated images to 580 through image manipulation using data augmentation techniques, which can improve…

Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max is $250 off

Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max is $250 off

The top-of-the-line MacBooks are undoubtedly expensive, so we're happy anytime there's a sale. Right now, Apple's 2023 MacBook Pro laptop with an M3 Max chip is touting a 7 percent price cut, dropping to $3,249 from $3,499. Yes, the device's 1TB of storage and 36GB of unified memory still require a large investment, but we'll gladly take the $250 in savings. This deal is running on Amazon and B&H, but if you want to bump things up to 48GB of unified memory, that model is down to $3,699 from $3,999 on Amazon — an 8 percent discount.AppleApple's MacBook Pro with…

ML is useful for many things, but not for predicting scientific replicability

ML is useful for many things, but not for predicting scientific replicability

Science rests on replicability and reproducibility. Without it, we can’t separate useful insights about the world from artifacts arising due to chance, and even fraud and malpractice by researchers. There are other costs too: one study estimated the cost of irreproducible research at $28 billion every single year, in the field of preclinical research alone. Earlier this year, a paper in the widely read PNAS journal raised the possibility of detecting non-replicable findings using machine learning (ML). The authors claimed ML could be used to predict which studies would replicate, and ultimately be used for deciding which studies should be replicated…

RE-Adapt: Reverse Engineered Adaptation of Large Language Models

RE-Adapt: Reverse Engineered Adaptation of Large Language Models

arXiv:2405.15007v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We introduce RE-Adapt, an approach to fine-tuning large language models on new domains without degrading any pre-existing instruction-tuning. We reverse engineer an adapter which isolates what an instruction-tuned model has learned beyond its corresponding pretrained base model. Importantly, this requires no additional data or training. We can then fine-tune the base model on a new domain and readapt it to instruction following with the reverse engineered adapter. RE-Adapt and our low-rank variant LoRE-Adapt both outperform other methods of fine-tuning, across multiple popular LLMs and datasets, even when the models are used in conjunction with retrieval-augmented…

Technical analysis without external libraries | Deephaven

In my last blog, I discussed the use of Bollinger Bands in financial analysis, as well as showed an implementation in Deephaven that took only two table operations.Deephaven makes implementing technical indicators easy without any third-party integrations.Effective trading strategies typically require more than one technical indicator. Bollinger Bands are a great place to start, but how are others implemented in a tool like Deephaven? Many of the most popular and useful indicators are also easy to implement with Deephaven alone. All examples in this blog will use a cryptocurrency history dataset of trade data from September 22, 2021. The calculations will…

GRC startup LogicGate promises to accelerate safe AI deployments – SiliconANGLE

Governance, risk and compliance technology startup LogicGate Inc. is looking to cater to enterprises that are concerned their new generative artificial intelligence deployments are going to get them into trouble with regulators. To assuage those concerns, today it has announced a new Risk Cloud AI Governance Solution that it says is purpose-built to help customers govern and manage their AI technology implementations and ensure they remain in compliance. It also debuted a new service called Risk Cloud AI, which is a new tool that aims to help companies accelerate their GRC programs. LogicGate says generative AI is being rapidly implemented…
