Applied Materials Forecast Meets Estimates as AI Fuels Growth

Applied Materials Forecast Meets Estimates as AI Fuels Growth

Applied Materials Inc., the largest US maker of chip-manufacturing equipment, delivered an in-line sales forecast that disappointed investors who’d been looking for a bigger payoff from artificial intelligence spending. Fiscal fourth-quarter sales will be about $6.93 billion, the company said in a statementBloomberg Terminal Thursday. That matched the average analyst estimate, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Profit, minus certain items, will be roughly $2.18 a share. Analysts were projecting $2.15 for the period, which runs through October. Source link lol

Russia’s throwing away an advantage of the Soviet-style tank by building weird cage armor to shield them from drones

Russia’s throwing away an advantage of the Soviet-style tank by building weird cage armor to shield them from drones

Russia and Ukraine have been welding cages on their tanks to shield them from drones that explode on impact or drop bombs on unsuspecting crews. For the Russians, which really only operate Soviet-style tanks, the cage armor add-ons can take away one of the advantages of this design by eliminating its low profile and making it easier to detect and engage. The unusually towering, bulky cage designs the Russians have employed are especially problematic in this regard. But that may be a trade-off that Russia is willing to make, especially in this war where tank-on-tank battles are rare but drones are an…

Bearing Fault Diagnosis using Graph Sampling and Aggregation Network

Bearing Fault Diagnosis using Graph Sampling and Aggregation Network

arXiv:2408.07099v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Bearing fault diagnosis technology has a wide range of practical applications in industrial production, energy and other fields. Timely and accurate detection of bearing faults plays an important role in preventing catastrophic accidents and ensuring product quality. Traditional signal analysis techniques and deep learning-based fault detection algorithms do not take into account the intricate correlation between signals, making it difficult to further improve detection accuracy. To address this problem, we introduced Graph Sampling and Aggregation (GraphSAGE) network and proposed GraphSAGE-based Bearing fault Diagnosis (GSABFD) algorithm. The original vibration signal is firstly sliced through a fixed…

73% of organizations are embracing gen AI, but far fewer are assessing risks

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More A new survey from PwC of 1,001 U.S.-based executives in business and technology roles finds that 73% of the respondents currently or plan to use generative AI in their organizations. However, only 58% of respondents have started assessing AI risks. For PwC, responsible AI relates to value, safety and trust and should be part of a company’s risk management processes. Jenn Kosar, U.S. AI assurance leader at PwC, told VentureBeat that six months ago, it would be acceptable that companies began…

Ensemble architecture in polyp segmentation

Ensemble architecture in polyp segmentation

arXiv:2408.07262v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In this research, we revisit the architecture of semantic segmentation and evaluate the models excelling in polyp segmentation. We introduce an integrated framework that harnesses the advantages of different models to attain an optimal outcome. More specifically, we fuse the learned features from convolutional and transformer models for prediction, and we view this approach as an ensemble technique to enhance model performance. Our experiments on polyp segmentation reveal that the proposed architecture surpasses other top models, exhibiting improved learning capacity and resilience. Knowledge in Superposition: Unveiling the Failures of Lifelong Knowledge Editing for Large Language Models

Knowledge in Superposition: Unveiling the Failures of Lifelong Knowledge Editing for Large Language Models

arXiv:2408.07413v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Knowledge editing aims to update outdated or incorrect knowledge in large language models (LLMs). However, current knowledge editing methods have limited scalability for lifelong editing. This study explores the fundamental reason why knowledge editing fails in lifelong editing. We begin with the closed-form solution derived from linear associative memory, which underpins state-of-the-art knowledge editing methods. We extend the solution from single editing to lifelong editing, and through rigorous mathematical derivation, identify an interference term in the final solution, suggesting that editing knowledge may impact irrelevant knowledge. Further analysis of the interference term reveals a close…

California state IDs can now be stored in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

California is the latest state to make its driver's licenses mobile. Today, Governor Gavin Newsom's office that both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet will be adding support for California driver's licenses and state IDs. The release clarified that residents still need to carry a physical copy of their identification, but that the mobile option would make age verification faster during air travel and at participating businesses.“We’re partnering with two iconic California companies – Apple and Google – to provide convenient, private and secure driver’s licenses and ID cards directly on people’s phones," Newsom said. "This is a big step in…

I compared ice-cream bars from Wegmans, Whole Foods, and Costco to find the tastiest ones. The ice-cream bars from Wegmans' were OK, but they didn't stand out to me.My wife and I loved the chocolate-and-nut coating on the Kirkland Signature ice-cream bars.
