Russia-linked hackers cut heat to 600 Ukrainian apartment buildings in the dead of winter, researchers say

Cybersecurity company Dragos has flagged malware that can attack industrial control systems (ICS), tricking them into malicious behavior like turning off the heat and hot water in the middle of winter. TechCrunch reports that’s precisely what the malware, dubbed FrostyGoop, did this January in Lviv, Ukraine, when residents in over 600 apartment buildings lost heat for two days amid freezing temperatures.Dragos says FrostyGoop is only the ninth known malware designed to target industrial controllers. It’s also the first to specifically set its sights on Modbus, a widely deployed communications protocol invented in 1979. Modbus is frequently used in industrial environments…

How to Debug Scripts in Bash

How to Debug Scripts in Bash

When I was first starting out with some command line automation and development, I remember spending many hours trying to find the error in my code, and in the end, it could be something very simple, like a comma. You may have faced the same situation as well. Knowing how to use proper debugging technique will help you resolve errors quickly. Unlike other languages, there is no debugging tool for bash where you can set breakpoints, step through code, etc. But you can enable some options in your scripts for debugging, which can help you, as follows: Enable debugging flags…

Meta launches open-source AI app ‘competitive’ with closed rivals

Meta has claimed that its new artificial intelligence model is the first open-source system that will rival products from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic. In a blogpost, the company said its new model, with the unwieldy name of Llama 3.1 405B, “is competitive” with others – including those from OpenAI and Anthropic – “across a range of tasks”.If true, it would mean that for the first time, one of the most powerful AI models in the world is available without an intermediary charging for access – or controlling what its technology is used for.“Developers can fully customise the models for…

Step-by-Step Reasoning to Solve Grid Puzzles: Where do LLMs Falter?

Step-by-Step Reasoning to Solve Grid Puzzles: Where do LLMs Falter?

arXiv:2407.14790v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Solving grid puzzles involves a significant amount of logical reasoning. Hence, it is a good domain to evaluate the reasoning capability of a model which can then guide us to improve the reasoning ability of models. However, most existing works evaluate only the final predicted answer of a puzzle, without delving into an in-depth analysis of the LLMs' reasoning chains (such as where they falter) or providing any finer metrics to evaluate them. Since LLMs may rely on simple heuristics or artifacts to predict the final answer, it is crucial to evaluate the generated reasoning…

Social robot or digital avatar, users interact with this AI technology as if it’s real

Humans are interacting more than ever with artificial intelligence (AI) – from the development of the first “social robots” (a robot with a physical body programmed to interact and engage with humans) like Kismet in the 1990s to smart speakers such as Amazon’s Alexa. But this technology is changing how humans relate with it – and with each other. Our new research looked at how humans experience interacting with AI social robots or digital avatars – AI virtual chatbots designed to look and interact like a human on a device. These are designed to increase human interaction with them. Social…

Llama 3.1 models are now available in Amazon SageMaker JumpStart | Amazon Web Services

Today, we are excited to announce that the state-of-the-art Llama 3.1 collection of multilingual large language models (LLMs), which includes pre-trained and instruction tuned generative AI models in 8B, 70B, and 405B sizes, is available through Amazon SageMaker JumpStart to deploy for inference. Llama is a publicly accessible LLM designed for developers, researchers, and businesses to build, experiment, and responsibly scale their generative artificial intelligence (AI) ideas. In this post, we walk through how to discover and deploy Llama 3.1 models using SageMaker JumpStart. Overview of Llama 3.1 The Llama 3.1 multilingual LLMs are a collection of pre-trained and instruction…

RAG Is All The Rage — Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Demystified

Enterprises experimenting with generative AI (genAI) are prioritizing use cases that enable internal and external users to better retrieve information they need, be it data, how-to pages, corporate policies, or return policies. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is now the most common underlying approach for building this type of large language model (LLM)-based enterprise knowledge-retrieval application. What is RAG, and why is it so useful? In a series of blog posts, we will explore the latest developments in RAG architecture, starting with this first one focused on the basics that explain the motivation for implementing RAG. Let’s first review RAG-less architectures and…
