Data as a product: Enhancing decision-making with design thinking – SiliconANGLE

As data continues to be at the epicenter of better decision-making in organizations, viewing data as a product should be part of the compass for enhanced value acceleration. For data to materialize as a product, design thinking is essential because information should be shared in a standardized way using a mesh framework, according to John Spens (pictured), managing director of North America data and AI at Thoughtworks Inc. Thoughtworks’ John Spens takes theCUBE through the data as a product lens. “The principle most quickly embraced by our clients, by individuals I talked to, by myself, was that idea of thinking…

I ended up on 10-day cruise without all of my luggage because of one common travel mistake

I've gone on more than a dozen cruises in my life, and one of the first trips I took taught me a valuable lesson: Always arrive at your departure port early.About 25 years ago, my family and I were flying to where our cruise would depart. Our flight was delayed, and by the time we landed in our port city, we were in a panic. We rushed off the plane and headed to the baggage carousel, but one of our checked bags was taking too long (or maybe it never made it onto the plane). We didn't have time to…

Safeguarding Your Memories: Tackling Video File Corruption – gHacks Tech News

You've just returned from an unforgettable vacation, and you're eager to relive those moments through your recorded videos. But as you press play, the screen goes blank or, worse, displays an error message. Video file corruption can strike unexpectedly, jeopardizing your cherished memories and essential footage. Corrupted video files can come from various sources. Whether they're due to physical damage to storage devices, interruptions during file transfers, or software glitches, the result is often the same—a damaged video that seems beyond repair. Finding a reliable solution to restore these corrupted files is crucial. Without a proper repair tool, those treasured…

The exponential expenses of AI development

The exponential expenses of AI development

Tech giants like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta are riding high on a wave of revenue from AI-driven cloud services, yet simultaneously drowning in the substantial costs of pushing AI’s boundaries. Recent financial reports paint a picture of a double-edged sword: on one side, impressive gains; on the other, staggering expenses.  This dichotomy has led Bloomberg to aptly dub AI development a “huge money pit,” highlighting the complex economic reality behind today’s AI revolution. At the heart of this financial problem lies a relentless push for bigger, more sophisticated AI models. The quest for artificial general intelligence (AGI) has led companies to develop…

Generative AI like ChatGPT in Blockchain Federated Learning: use cases, opportunities and future

Generative AI like ChatGPT in Blockchain Federated Learning: use cases, opportunities and future

arXiv:2407.18358v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Federated learning has become a significant approach for training machine learning models using decentralized data without necessitating the sharing of this data. Recently, the incorporation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) methods has provided new possibilities for improving privacy, augmenting data, and customizing models. This research explores potential integrations of generative AI in federated learning, revealing various opportunities to enhance privacy, data efficiency, and model performance. It particularly emphasizes the importance of generative models like generative adversarial networks (GANs) and variational autoencoders (VAEs) in creating synthetic data that replicates the distribution of real data. Generating synthetic…

Neural Surface Detection for Unsigned Distance Fields

Neural Surface Detection for Unsigned Distance Fields

arXiv:2407.18381v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Extracting surfaces from Signed Distance Fields (SDFs) can be accomplished using traditional algorithms, such as Marching Cubes. However, since they rely on sign flips across the surface, these algorithms cannot be used directly on Unsigned Distance Fields (UDFs). In this work, we introduce a deep-learning approach to taking a UDF and turning it locally into an SDF, so that it can be effectively triangulated using existing algorithms. We show that it achieves better accuracy in surface detection than existing methods. Furthermore it generalizes well to unseen shapes and datasets, while being parallelizable. We also demonstrate…

The Art of Refusal: A Survey of Abstention in Large Language Models

arXiv:2407.18418v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Abstention, the refusal of large language models (LLMs) to provide an answer, is increasingly recognized for its potential to mitigate hallucinations and enhance safety in building LLM systems. In this survey, we introduce a framework to examine abstention behavior from three perspectives: the query, the model, and human values. We review the literature on abstention methods (categorized based on the development stages of LLMs), benchmarks, and evaluation metrics, and discuss the merits and limitations of prior work. We further identify and motivate areas for future research, such as encouraging the study of abstention as a…
