Italy Makes Cybersecurity Demands in Talks on Chinese Auto Plant

Italy is demanding Dongfeng Motor Group Co. agree to safeguards on cybersecurity and data protection as the price of support for a new plant by the Chinese automaker, according to people familiar with the matter. As talks advance with Dongfeng, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government is requiring components such as infotainment units be provided by local suppliers for security reasons, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential negotiations. Italian officials also want consumer data to be collected and managed within the country, they said. Source link lol

Combining Neural Architecture Search and Automatic Code Optimization: A Survey

Combining Neural Architecture Search and Automatic Code Optimization: A Survey

arXiv:2408.04116v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Deep Learning models have experienced exponential growth in complexity and resource demands in recent years. Accelerating these models for efficient execution on resource-constrained devices has become more crucial than ever. Two notable techniques employed to achieve this goal are Hardware-aware Neural Architecture Search (HW-NAS) and Automatic Code Optimization (ACO). HW-NAS automatically designs accurate yet hardware-friendly neural networks, while ACO involves searching for the best compiler optimizations to apply on neural networks for efficient mapping and inference on the target hardware. This survey explores recent works that combine these two techniques within a single framework. We…

Engadget Podcast: The Google search monopoly + ‘Industry’ creator interview

Google is officially a monopoly, according to a US court. But what does that really mean? This week, Devindra and Senior Editor Karissa Bell dive into the landmark Google antitrust case to explore how it could affect the future of search. Google claims it's simply delivering the best product, but clearly the court thinks otherwise. Also, we chat about X/Twitter's desperate lawsuit against advertisers who boycotted the social network.Listen below or subscribe on your podcast app of choice. Qwen2-Math: A new era for AI maths whizzes

Qwen2-Math: A new era for AI maths whizzes

Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen team has unveiled Qwen2-Math, a series of large language models specifically designed to tackle complex mathematical problems. These new models – built upon the existing Qwen2 foundation – demonstrate remarkable proficiency in solving arithmetic and mathematical challenges, and outperform former industry leaders. The Qwen team crafted Qwen2-Math using a vast and diverse Mathematics-specific Corpus. This corpus comprises a rich tapestry of high-quality resources, including web texts, books, code, exam questions, and synthetic data generated by Qwen2 itself. Rigorous evaluation on both English and Chinese mathematical benchmarks – including GSM8K, Math, MMLU-STEM, CMATH, and GaoKao Math – revealed…

PaveCap: The First Multimodal Framework for Comprehensive Pavement Condition Assessment with Dense Captioning and PCI Estimation

[Submitted on 7 Aug 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled PaveCap: The First Multimodal Framework for Comprehensive Pavement Condition Assessment with Dense Captioning and PCI Estimation, by Blessing Agyei Kyem and 3 other authors View PDF Abstract:This research introduces the first multimodal approach for pavement condition assessment, providing both quantitative Pavement Condition Index (PCI) predictions and qualitative descriptions. We introduce PaveCap, a novel framework for automated pavement condition assessment. The framework consists of two main parts: a Single-Shot PCI Estimation Network and a Dense Captioning Network. The PCI Estimation Network uses YOLOv8 for object detection, the Segment Anything…

A mindset for fairer AI in criminal justice

A mindset for fairer AI in criminal justice

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being discussed nearly everywhere these days, including in legal circles. AI promises efficiency and objectivity, which are sorely needed in the justice system, but there are also horror stories, including racial bias against criminal defendants and even innocent individuals being wrongfully arrested. The root cause often lies in the inherent biases within some algorithms that power AI systems, but the problem runs deeper than that. It's also about the data the systems are trained on, the goals we set for AI systems, how those are applied, and how we interpret the results. It’s not just technology -…

Ukraine’s audacious invasion of Russian territory is a massive blow to Putin’s power

But as the scale of the attack became clearer, with thousands of Ukrainian troops advancing up to six miles into Russia, President Vladimir Putin hurried to contain the fallout. In a televised meeting with Kursk Oblast Acting Head Alexey Smirnov Thursday, Putin urged the governor to show "courage and composure," and assured civilians fleeing the fighting that help was on its way.The meeting, said US think tank The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), was aimed at reassuring Russians that the situation was under control to avoid "significant domestic discontent."Raids such as that launched by Ukraine this week have the…

UNLEARN Efficient Removal of Knowledge in Large Language Models

UNLEARN Efficient Removal of Knowledge in Large Language Models

arXiv:2408.04140v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Given the prevalence of large language models (LLMs) and the prohibitive cost of training these models from scratch, dynamically forgetting specific knowledge e.g., private or proprietary, without retraining the model has become an important capability. This paper proposes a novel method to achieve this objective called UNLEARN. The approach builds upon subspace methods to identify and specifically target the removal of knowledge without adversely affecting other knowledge in the LLM. Results demonstrate 96% of targeted knowledge can be forgotten while maintaining performance on other knowledge within 2.5% of the original model, significantly outperforming the discriminatory…

The internet relies on vulnerable undersea cables — but the biggest risks aren’t the ones you think

The biggest threat to the undersea cables that power the internet —and, by extension, the world — may not be what you'd expect. While espionage and sabotage are growing threats, less dramatic but more frequent factors are causing the biggest problems. As The Guardian reported, the network of undersea cables is more at risk from anchors and fishing than from Russian spies. The Guardian reported on the vulnerability of the network of undersea cables that power internet connectivity worldwide, citing Tonga as an example. In 2022, an underwater eruption 1,000 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb severed the country's internet connection, triggering…
