Legal Experts Say OpenAI Is in Big Trouble If Scarlett Johansson Decides to Sue

"You can't imitate someone else's distinctive voice to sell stuff."Open SeasonOpenAI has landed itself in hot water for pushing out an update to ChatGPT that features a virtual assistant with an uncanny vocal resemblance to Scarlett Johansson — and it could be staring down the barrel of a compelling lawsuit.Almost instantly, comparisons to the movie "Her" abounded, in which the actress plays a chatbot named Samantha that falls in love with a lonely man. The Power of Truly Open Source AI. The spin doctors of some big closed-AI companies have been busy inflating the “AGI is here soon, AGI will be an existential risk” bubble. But that thankfully that is deflating quickly, and backfiring somehow. In the meantime, the open source AI community is stubbornly embarked upon releasing truly open source, efficient, smallish, powerful AI models that match or beat the closed AI models from big companies. The reaction from these big closed AI companies: “Oh! open source AI models are dangerous, we need to regulate open source AI. And btw: We’re dropping the…

Air Force Secretary: Military needs AI to augment human capabilities

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military needs to rapidly adopt artificial intelligence technology to aid in tracking targets, data analysis and managing complex missions, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said Dec. 2 at the Reagan National Defense Forum. Speaking on a panel at the annual forum in Simi Valley, California, Kendall touted AI as an essential technology needed to strengthen U.S. national defense capabilities.  Although AI has become an integral part of our today’s business across many industries, its use in military systems has raised concerns about unintended outcomes and escalation of an AI arms race. Kendall argued that when associated…

New study finds AI-generated empathy has its limits

New study finds AI-generated empathy has its limits

Conversational agents (CAs) such as Alexa and Siri are designed to answer questions, offer suggestions -- and even display empathy. However, new research finds they do poorly compared to humans when interpreting and exploring a user's experience. CAs are powered by large language models (LLMs) that ingest massive amounts of human-produced data, and thus can be prone to the same biases as the humans from which the information comes. Researchers from Cornell University, Olin College and Stanford University tested this theory by prompting CAs to display empathy while conversing with or about 65 distinct human identities. The team found that…

Building DBRX-class Custom LLMs with Mosaic AI Training

Building DBRX-class Custom LLMs with Mosaic AI Training

We recently introduced DBRX: an open, state-of-the-art, general-purpose LLM. DBRX was trained, fine-tuned, and evaluated using Mosaic AI Training, scaling training to 3072 NVIDIA H100s and processing more than 12 trillion tokens in the process.Training LLMs, and in particular MoE models such as DBRX, is hard. It requires overcoming many infrastructure, performance, and scientific challenges. Mosaic AI Training was purposely built to address these challenges and was battle-tested through the training of DBRX, the MPT series of models, and many other LLMs such as Ola’s Krutrim, AI2’s OLMo, Dynamo AI’s Dynamo 8B, Refuel’s LLM-2, and others.Figure 1: Yet another insightful…

Pikmin Bloom has been helping me meet my outdoor walking goals for years

Over the past few years, I’ve developed a peaceful little routine to make up for time spent cooped up inside working on sunny days: after I’ve closed my laptop for the day, I throw my sneakers on, open Pikmin Bloom on my phone, and go for a long walk to clear my head and plant virtual flowers with the 'min.Pikmin Bloom was released for Android and iOS in 2021 by Pokémon Go developer Niantic and Nintendo as another “go outside and touch grass” app, and I’ve been playing it pretty regularly since then. Only recently, when the app announced some…
