US cites AI deepfakes as reason to keep Biden recording with Robert Hur secret

The US Department of Justice is making a novel legal argument to keep a recording of an interview with Joe Biden from becoming public. In a filing late last week, the bureau cited the risk of AI-generated deepfakes as one of the reasons it refuses to release audio of the president’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur. The conversation about Biden’s handling of classified documents is a source of heated political contention, with Republicans pushing for release of the recordings and the White House moving to block them. The justice department’s filing, which it released late on Friday night, argues that…

Ukraine is facing training problems, but it’s handling its new combat troops better than the Russians, war analysts say

Ukrainian commanders are having to train new combat troops at the front due to training issues, but war experts say that even with the problems, it's better than what the Russians do.While there's the possibility of a decrease in the overall quality of the Ukrainian forces as new combat troops replace experienced troops at the front, especially as newly mobilized forces come into play, the quality is still likely to be higher, at least for the time being, than that of the Russians, war analysts from the Washington, DC-based Institute for the Study of War said.Ukrainian military officials recently told…

Data + AI Strategy: Platform Focus

Data + AI Strategy: Platform Focus

The secret to good AI is great data. As AI adoption soars, the data platform is the most important component of any enterprise's technology stack.  It’s increasingly clear that Generative AI systems won’t be one monolithic, but rather a combination of many different components that must work together. And while data is one of the most important pieces, there are many other functions required for enterprises to actually deploy the models into the real-world. That’s why, when businesses are looking to build the foundational platform that will support the breadth of their data and AI needs, they should keep three core pillars…

Scientists should use AI as a tool, not an oracle

Scientists should use AI as a tool, not an oracle

Who produces AI hype? As we discuss in the AI Snake Oil book, it is not just companies and the media but also AI researchers. For example, a pair of widely-publicized papers in Nature in December 2023 claimed to have discovered over 2.2 million new materials using AI, and robotically synthesized 41 of them. Unfortunately, the claims were quickly debunked: “Most of the [41] materials produced were misidentified, and the rest were already known”. As for the large dataset, examining a sample of 250 compounds showed that it was mostly junk.A core selling point of machine learning is discovery without…

AMD Reveals Ryzen 9000 CPUs and AI PC Architecture at Computex 2024

AMD has a broad portfolio of GPUs, CPUs, architectures and networking products and recently joined a standard-building group intended to create standards for AI chip technology in opposition to rival NVIDIA. Its latest hardware, announced at Computex in Taipei on June 2, brings improved AI performance with products including the Ryzen 9000 series and the Ryzen AI 300 chip, which is a repackaging of the Ryzen 9 chips. AMD’s next desktop processors are the Ryzen 9000 series The Zen 5 architecture and XDNA 2 NPU power the Ryzen 9000 series, which can be leveraged in desktops for productivity, content creation…

Announcing Google DeepMind

Announcing Google DeepMind

Earlier today we announced some changes that will accelerate our progress in AI and help us develop more capable AI systems safely and responsibly. Below is a recap of what DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis shared with employees:Hi TeamWhen we launched DeepMind back in 2010, many people thought general AI was a farfetched science fiction technology that was decades away from being a reality. Now, we live in a time in which AI research and technology is advancing exponentially. In the coming years, AI - and ultimately AGI - has the potential to drive one of the greatest social, economic and scientific…

Prioritizing employee well-being: An innovative approach with generative AI and Amazon SageMaker Canvas | Amazon Web Services

In today’s fast-paced corporate landscape, employee mental health has become a crucial aspect that organizations can no longer overlook. Many companies recognize that their greatest asset lies in their dedicated workforce, and each employee plays a vital role in collective success. As such, promoting employee well-being by creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment is of utmost importance. However, quantifying and assessing mental health can be a daunting task. Traditional methods like employee well-being surveys or manual approaches may not always provide the most accurate or actionable insights. In this post, we explore an innovative solution that uses Amazon SageMaker…

Analyzing IBM’s operational strategy for hybrid AI – SiliconANGLE

Analyzing IBM’s operational strategy for hybrid AI – SiliconANGLE

As artificial intelligence expands to cover an increasing number of industries, an emerging topic is hybrid AI — which combines the hybrid cloud model with AI’s data processing capabilities. What constitutes hybrid AI practically and how (if at all) is it poised to add concrete value to the existing AI transformation wave? TheCUBE explores IBM’s hybrid AI strategy with Varun Bijlani and Hillery Hunter at IBM Think 2024. “The first fundamental thought out here is that there is a very significant symbiotic relationship between hybrid cloud and AI,” said Varun Bijlani (pictured, left), global managing partner of hybrid cloud services at…

Back to the Basics on Predicting Transfer Performance

Back to the Basics on Predicting Transfer Performance

arXiv:2405.20420v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In the evolving landscape of deep learning, selecting the best pre-trained models from a growing number of choices is a challenge. Transferability scorers propose alleviating this scenario, but their recent proliferation, ironically, poses the challenge of their own assessment. In this work, we propose both robust benchmark guidelines for transferability scorers, and a well-founded technique to combine multiple scorers, which we show consistently improves their results. We extensively evaluate 13 scorers from literature across 11 datasets, comprising generalist, fine-grained, and medical imaging datasets. We show that few scorers match the predictive performance of the simple…
