Apple, NVIDIA and Anthropic reportedly used YouTube transcripts without permission to train AI models

Some of the world’s largest tech companies trained their AI models on a dataset that included transcripts of more than 173,000 YouTube videos without permission, a new investigation from Proof News has found. The dataset, which was created by a nonprofit company called EleutherAI, contains transcripts of YouTube videos from more than 48,000 channels and was used by Apple, NVIDIA and Anthropic among other companies. The findings of the investigation spotlight AI’s uncomfortable truth: the technology is largely built on the backs of data siphoned from creators without their consent or compensation. The dataset doesn’t include any videos or images from…

UFQA: Utility guided Fingerphoto Quality Assessment

arXiv:2407.11141v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Quality assessment of fingerprints captured using digital cameras and smartphones, also called fingerphotos, is a challenging problem in biometric recognition systems. As contactless biometric modalities are gaining more attention, their reliability should also be improved. Many factors, such as illumination, image contrast, camera angle, etc., in fingerphoto acquisition introduce various types of distortion that may render the samples useless. Current quality estimation methods developed for fingerprints collected using contact-based sensors are inadequate for fingerphotos. We propose Utility guided Fingerphoto Quality Assessment (UFQA), a self-supervised dual encoder framework to learn meaningful feature representations to assess fingerphoto…

2 European countries are going to lose millionaires in the next 4 years

Most developed countries are set to gain more wealthy people in the next five years — with two big outliers.UBS tracked 56 countries for its annual wealth report, released last week. The financial services firm found that 52 of them will add millionaires by 2028. Some countries, like Taiwan, will gain as many as 50% more millionaires during that time. But the United Kingdom and the Netherlands make "notable exceptions" on this list, per UBS, because both are forecasted to lose millionaires. The UK and the Netherlands had attracted "nomadic wealth" — people who chose to move to those countries, rather than…

Do Large Language Models Understand Verbal Indicators of Romantic Attraction?

Do Large Language Models Understand Verbal Indicators of Romantic Attraction?

arXiv:2407.10989v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: What makes people 'click' on a first date and become mutually attracted to one another? While understanding and predicting the dynamics of romantic interactions used to be exclusive to human judgment, we show that Large Language Models (LLMs) can detect romantic attraction during brief getting-to-know-you interactions. Examining data from 964 speed dates, we show that ChatGPT (and Claude 3) can predict both objective and subjective indicators of speed dating success (r=0.12-0.23). ChatGPT's predictions of actual matching (i.e., the exchange of contact information) were not only on par with those of human judges who had access…

MSEval: A Dataset for Material Selection in Conceptual Design to Evaluate Algorithmic Models

[Submitted on 12 Jul 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled MSEval: A Dataset for Material Selection in Conceptual Design to Evaluate Algorithmic Models, by Yash Patawari Jain and 4 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:Material selection plays a pivotal role in many industries, from manufacturing to construction. Material selection is usually carried out after several cycles of conceptual design, during which designers iteratively refine the design solution and the intended manufacturing approach. In design research, material selection is typically treated as an optimization problem with a single correct answer. Moreover, it is also often restricted to specific…

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien tried to sell bipartisanship to the RNC, but all he did was legitimize Trump, critics say

Even before Teamsters President Sean O'Brien made a historic move on Monday by being the first president of the union to speak at the Republican National Convention, fellow members were upset by him getting cozy with Donald Trump. In a scathing op-ed published July 10, Teamsters Vice President at Large John Palmer said O'Brien's appearance "regardless of the message, only normalizes and makes the most anti-union party and President I've seen in my lifetime seem palatable."And in January, when O'Brien met with Trump, James Curbeam, the national chairman of the Teamsters National Black Caucus, called the former president a "scab masquerading…
