ViTime: A Visual Intelligence-Based Foundation Model for Time Series Forecasting

arXiv:2407.07311v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The success of large pretrained models in natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV) has opened new avenues for constructing foundation models for time series forecasting (TSF). Traditional TSF foundation models rely heavily on numerical data fitting. In contrast, the human brain is inherently skilled at processing visual information, prefer predicting future trends by observing visualized sequences. From a biomimetic perspective, utilizing models to directly process numerical sequences might not be the most effective route to achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This paper proposes ViTime, a novel Visual Intelligence-based foundation model for TSF. ViTime…

Washington Post Launches AI to Answer Climate Questions but It Won’t Say Whether AI Is Bad for the Climate

Washington Post Launches AI to Answer Climate Questions but It Won’t Say Whether AI Is Bad for the Climate

This week, The Washington Post launched a new AI tool called "Climate Answers," which the venerable newspaper describes as leveraging "artificial intelligence to help our users discover and explore The Post's authoritative climate reporting."Oddly, though, the AI chatbot is strikingly reticent to answer questions about how AI is impacting the environment — even though WaPo has reported deeply and very specifically about AI's aggressive energy consumption and climate impact. The reality is that AI's massive environmental footprint has been one of the biggest climate and energy stories of the past year. As WaPo noted in June, the International Energy Agency estimates that generating one…

Exploring Camera Encoder Designs for Autonomous Driving Perception

Exploring Camera Encoder Designs for Autonomous Driving Perception

arXiv:2407.07276v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The cornerstone of autonomous vehicles (AV) is a solid perception system, where camera encoders play a crucial role. Existing works usually leverage pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) or Vision Transformers (ViTs) designed for general vision tasks, such as image classification, segmentation, and 2D detection. Although those well-known architectures have achieved state-of-the-art accuracy in AV-related tasks, e.g., 3D Object Detection, there remains significant potential for improvement in network design due to the nuanced complexities of industrial-level AV dataset. Moreover, existing public AV benchmarks usually contain insufficient data, which might lead to inaccurate evaluation of those architectures. To…

Automating model customization in Amazon Bedrock with AWS Step Functions workflow | Amazon Web Services

Automating model customization in Amazon Bedrock with AWS Step Functions workflow | Amazon Web Services

Large language models have become indispensable in generating intelligent and nuanced responses across a wide variety of business use cases. However, enterprises often have unique data and use cases that require customizing large language models beyond their out-of-the-box capabilities. Amazon Bedrock is a fully managed service that offers a choice of high-performing foundation models (FMs) from leading AI companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, Mistral AI, Stability AI, and Amazon through a single API, along with a broad set of capabilities you need to build generative AI applications with security, privacy, and responsible AI. To enable secure and scalable…

LokiLM: Technical Report

LokiLM: Technical Report

arXiv:2407.07370v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In this work, we introduce LokiLM, a 1.4B parameter large language model trained on 500B tokens. Our model performs strongly in natural language reasoning tasks and achieves state-of-the-art performance among models with 1.5B parameters or less. LokiLM is trained using multi-teacher knowledge distillation and high-quality training data to achieve benchmark results competitive with larger models trained on significantly more tokens. We support these findings by introducing steps to avoid benchmark contamination and overfitting throughout our development process. Despite its promising performance, LokiLM exhibits a concerning amount of hallucinations and scores poorly on the TruthfulQA benchmark,…

Apple to Allow Rivals to Access ‘Tap and Go’ Technology

Apple to Allow Rivals to Access ‘Tap and Go’ Technology

Apple will allow rival companies to operate wallet technology on its iPhones free-of-charge for a decade, European Union regulators said on Thursday, in the latest overhaul prompted by local rules.Apple’s mobile wallet allows iPhone users to pay for products in-store and online using its own-brand Apple Pay. Until now, Apple has not made its near-field communication (NFC) technology, which allows phones to communicate with payment terminals, available to rival developers—causing the EU to warn in 2022 that restricting access to this technology qualifies as an abuse of market power.Apple’s concession ends a two-year dispute between the Big Tech giant and…

Americans make it clear: They want Biden out

A new poll from the Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos found that most Democrats want Joe Biden to bow out of the race, undermining his insistence that the calls to step aside are only coming from the elite. But his match-up against Donald Trump remains deadlocked, with the two men tied at 46% of the popular vote among registered voters. The poll was conducted between July 5 and July 9, but the numbers comparing Biden and Trump remain identical to those from April. These findings, however, are an anomaly, as eight other post-debate polls show Trump with an average 3.5 percentage point edge,…
