Is It Really Long Context if All You Need Is Retrieval? Towards Genuinely Difficult Long Context NLP

arXiv:2407.00402v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Improvements in language models' capabilities have pushed their applications towards longer contexts, making long-context evaluation and development an active research area. However, many disparate use-cases are grouped together under the umbrella term of "long-context", defined simply by the total length of the model's input, including - for example - Needle-in-a-Haystack tasks, book summarization, and information aggregation. Given their varied difficulty, in this position paper we argue that conflating different tasks by their context length is unproductive. As a community, we require a more precise vocabulary to understand what makes long-context tasks similar or different. We…

The US Army wants to equip its next-gen Abrams tank with modern military tech — without the bulk

A new contract decision is moving the US military's world-class Abrams tank in a direction it's never gone before: after decades of getting bulkier amid upgrades to add firepower and cutting-edge protection, it's finally getting a critically needed slim-down.Defense News was first to report at the end of May that the Army had awarded a contract to Abrams manufacturer General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) to start developing requirements for what it's calling the M1E3 — a new generation of Abrams tank.Reached for details on the contract, GDLS referred all questions to the Army's PEO Ground Combat Systems, which did not…

A Simple Attention-Based Mechanism for Bimodal Emotion Classification

arXiv:2407.00134v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Big data contain rich information for machine learning algorithms to utilize when learning important features during classification tasks. Human beings express their emotion using certain words, speech (tone, pitch, speed) or facial expression. Artificial Intelligence approach to emotion classification are largely based on learning from textual information. However, public datasets containing text and speech data provide sufficient resources to train machine learning algorithms for the tack of emotion classification. In this paper, we present novel bimodal deep learning-based architectures enhanced with attention mechanism trained and tested on text and speech data for emotion classification. We…

Michigan is building the nation’s first smart highway

A three-mile stretch of Interstate 94 in Michigan will be converted into America’s first smart highway.Axios reports that the Alphabet-backed startup Cavnue has started constructing the smart highway as part of a new pilot project that could spur other construction projects across the country. Two more highways are in the works for Austin, Texas and somewhere else in the Southwest, according to Cavnue’s website. The new smart road is big, long car tracking system for Michigan’s Department of Transportation (MDOT) and for drivers on the highway. The smart highway is designed to send data like traffic updates, weather conditions, driving conditions…

Benchmark Evaluation of Image Fusion algorithms for Smartphone Camera Capture

arXiv:2407.00301v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper investigates the trade-off between computational resource utilization and image quality in the context of image fusion techniques for smartphone camera capture. The study explores various combinations of fusion methods, fusion weights, number of frames, and stacking (a.k.a. merging) techniques using a proprietary dataset of images captured with Motorola smartphones. The objective was to identify optimal configurations that balance computational efficiency with image quality. Our results indicate that multi-scale methods and their single-scale fusion counterparts return similar image quality measures and runtime, but single-scale ones have lower memory usage. Furthermore, we identified that fusion…

Understanding Chain-of-Thought Prompting: A Revolution in Artificial Intelligence

Understanding Chain-of-Thought Prompting: A Revolution in Artificial Intelligence

What is Chain-of-Thought Prompting? Chain-of-Thought Prompting is a method that guides language models through a series of logical steps to arrive at an answer or solution. Unlike traditional approaches where models generate responses directly, CoT encourages models to “think out loud,” detailing their reasoning process before formulating a conclusion. How It Works Problem Decomposition: The model is encouraged to break down a complex problem into simpler sub-problems. Reasoning Sequences: By stimulating thought sequences, the model can approach questions in a more structured manner. Iterative Reflection: The model can revise and refine its answers based on new information or identified errors.…
