FTC bans General Motors from selling driver data for five years

The Federal Trade Commission has taken action against General Motors and OnStar for allegedly sharing details about drivers to third parties without their consent. The agency launched an investigation into the automotive company after The New York Times that GM had collected data about customers' vehicle use and sold it to third-party platforms used by insurance companies. The information came from the OnStar Smart Driver program, which customers with GM vehicles were encouraged to participate in or didn't realize they had agreed to join. The program gathered data about behaviors such as hard braking, late night driving and speeding and reportedly…

Our unofficial, silly and meaningless CES 2025 awards, just for fun

Our unofficial, silly and meaningless CES 2025 awards, just for fun

CES (formerly the Consumer Electronics Show) is the biggest tech convention of the year. It helps set the stage for all the wonderful gadgets we're going to see over the next 12 months. However, among all the quadcopters, questionably benevolent robots and devices with fancy flexible screens, there's a lot of small things that go into making CES a one-of-a-kind event. To highlight some of the silly, stupid and occasionally wholesome things we encountered at the show this year, we humbly present the very unofficial Dumb Fun awards for CES 2025.Cutest digger - Komatsu PC01E-2 Sam Rutherford for EngadgetKomatsu’s PC01E-2…

Faraday Future pitches a ‘fresh start’ with a minivan EV prototype at CES 2025

At CES 2017, Faraday Future introduced its futuristic luxury EV, the FF 91. Seven years later, following repeated delays, bankruptcy, lawsuits and other controversies, the company has sold “15 or 16” FF 91s. Now the company is detailing its latest strategy shift, with a plan to sell cheap EVs under its new low-cost “FX” brand. FX CEO Max Ma came to CES, along with two prototype vehicles, to pitch the plan that he described as a “fresh start” for the embattled company. As you might expect with Faraday, the exact details are somewhat hazy, but it involves sourcing parts from Chinese…

CES’s Pebble Flow EV trailer gets some tweaks ahead of its spring shipping date

CES’s Pebble Flow EV trailer gets some tweaks ahead of its spring shipping date

It's always gratifying when something promised at CES actually comes to market. That's the case with the Pebble Flow electric trailer that my colleague Sam Rutherford checked out last year's CES. I was able to see the final draft on the show floor this week and was adequately impressed. Like the (four!) other sustainable, electrified tiny homes we saw this year, it was shiny and luxe and decked out in wood tones, glass, metal and white polymers. The main features that drew us to the Flow last year remain intact: sleeping for four, a 45 kWh battery and a 1.1 kW…

The AC Future drivable, self-sustaining home transforms to be larger than your first apartment

The AC Future drivable, self-sustaining home transforms to be larger than your first apartment

The "AC" in AC Future stands for Amy and Cindy, founder Arthur Qin's two daughters. That's just one of the bits of info I gained at the company's CES event in which we got a first look at the new AC Future Ai-TH transformable home. This is yet another nattily appointed answer to the housing crisis we've seen on the 2025 show floor. It comes in three models: a deliverable pod (Ai-THu), a pullable trailer (Ai-THt) and a road-ready EV RV (Ai-THd). Press and prospective buyers got to tour the EV prototype this week (but we had to take our…

A holographic windshield from Hyundai Mobis is a big upgrade for in-car HUDs at CES 2025

A holographic windshield from Hyundai Mobis is a big upgrade for in-car HUDs at CES 2025

Automotive heads up displays (HUDs) have been around as far back as 1988, and while they’ve gotten brighter and more colorful over the years, even today’s most sophisticated implementations still feel a bit primitive. But after seeing what Hyundai Mobis (which makes auto parts for Hyundai, Kia and Genesis) is calling the world’s first full-windshield holographic display at CES 2025, it felt like I was looking at a major evolution in-car infotainment.Unlike traditional reflective HUDs, Hyundai Mobis’ holographic windshield display (HWD) consists of two main components: a projector (or in this case multiple projectors) hidden beneath the dash and a…

Sony’s Afeela 1 feels like a PlayStation 4 in the PS5 era

Sony’s Afeela 1 feels like a PlayStation 4 in the PS5 era

While there's plenty of automotive news to go around at CES 2025, far and away, the talk of the show is the Afeela 1. Again. For five years now, Sony has been showing off some variation on this same theme, first as the in 2020, then the , before adopting the unfortunate rebranding to , and this year finally to Afeela 1.Along the way, the car lost what little interesting styling it had while sticking true to some specifications that sounded good five years ago. Everything just feels a bit off, not the least of which is its starting price:…
