AIs encode language like brains do − opening a window on human conversations

Language enables people to transmit thoughts to each other because each person’s brain responds similarly to the meaning of words. In our newly published research, my colleagues and I developed a framework to model the brain activity of speakers as they engaged in face-to-face conversations. We recorded the electrical activity of two people’s brains as they engaged in unscripted conversations. Previous research has shown that when two people converse, their brain activity becomes coupled, or aligned, and that the degree of neural coupling is associated with better understanding of the speaker’s message. A neural code refers to particular patterns of…

The Marines are testing its mobile drone-killing machine, equipped with Stinger missiles and machine gun turrets, for full deployment

The Marines are testing its mobile drone-killing machine, equipped with Stinger missiles and machine gun turrets, for full deployment

It's shot down Iranian spy drones from the deck of an amphibious ship in the Strait of Hormuz and hunted unmanned aircraft in the Yuma Desert. But it's about to be put through its paces like never before. The Marine Air Defense Integrated System, or MADIS, the Marines' long-awaited drone-killing machine, is set to be fielded on a fast track starting with Hawaii's 3rd Littoral Anti-Air Battalion in fiscal 2025. The system, which gets mounted on two Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for a mobile hunter-killer one-two punch, has been long awaited as the Corps' answer to the surging aerial drone threat. Its first…

Task-Adapter: Task-specific Adaptation of Image Models for Few-shot Action Recognition

Task-Adapter: Task-specific Adaptation of Image Models for Few-shot Action Recognition

arXiv:2408.00249v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Existing works in few-shot action recognition mostly fine-tune a pre-trained image model and design sophisticated temporal alignment modules at feature level. However, simply fully fine-tuning the pre-trained model could cause overfitting due to the scarcity of video samples. Additionally, we argue that the exploration of task-specific information is insufficient when relying solely on well extracted abstract features. In this work, we propose a simple but effective task-specific adaptation method (Task-Adapter) for few-shot action recognition. By introducing the proposed Task-Adapter into the last several layers of the backbone and keeping the parameters of the original pre-trained…

DeliLaw: A Chinese Legal Counselling System Based on a Large Language Model

arXiv:2408.00357v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Traditional legal retrieval systems designed to retrieve legal documents, statutes, precedents, and other legal information are unable to give satisfactory answers due to lack of semantic understanding of specific questions. Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved excellent results in a variety of natural language processing tasks, which inspired us that we train a LLM in the legal domain to help legal retrieval. However, in the Chinese legal domain, due to the complexity of legal questions and the rigour of legal articles, there is no legal large model with satisfactory practical application yet. In this paper,…

We must be wary of the power of AI | Letters

In his interesting opinion article (Robots sacked, screenings shut down: a new movement of luddites is rising up against AI, 27 July), Ed Newton-Rex misses one of the most serious concerns about artificial intelligence: its surveillance potential. Governments have always spied on their subjects/citizens: technology multiplies their powers of spying. In his novel 1984, George Orwell had the authorities install a two-way telescreen system in every party member’s home, and in all workplaces and public spaces. This allowed Big Brother to monitor individuals’ actions and conversations, while he himself remained invisible.Today’s digital control systems operating through electronic tracking devices and voice…

Tesla sued over fatal Autopilot crash

is facing yet more legal action over Autopilot after the parents of a motorcyclist who was killed in a crash involving a Model 3 sued the company. The plaintiffs, who also sued the driver of the Tesla, claimed that the car's driver assistant tech and other safety measures are “defective and inadequate.”The plaintiffs argued in the complaint, which was obtained by , that Autopilot sensors and cameras “should have identified the hazard posed by" the motorcycle. Autopilot was engaged when the Model 3 struck the back of Landon Embry's motorcycle at 75-80 miles per hour in Utah in 2022. Embry…
