ClickHouse, a high-performance, real-time analytics database, has announced the acquisition of PeerDB, a leading data replication and synchronization platform specializing in change data capture (CDC) solutions for PostgreSQL (Postgres) databases.
While ClickHouse already offers a Postgres connector for data transfer and synchronization between popular relational and analytics databases, the PeerDB acquisition provides up to 10x speed improvement and additional specialized capabilities previously not offered by ClickHouse.
The increased speed can boost developer productivity and time-to-value when building real-time data-driven applications. The price of the acquisition has not been disclosed. However, it is worth noting that PeerDB did close a $3.6 million seed funding round in late 2023.
Earlier this year, PeerDB released a ClickHouse target connector for Postgres Change Data Capture (CDC). The connector emerged as the fastest-growing target connector for Postgres CDC, surpassing other data warehouses like Snowflake and BigQuery. Now with the acquisition, PeerDB will power the Postgres CDC connector for ClickPipes, the native integration engine that helps customers move data into ClickHouse.
Spun out of Yandex in 2021, ClickHouse was initially an open-source project that evolved into a real-time data warehouse for large enterprises. Over the years, it has grown into a widely adopted database system with a customer base that includes Microsoft, Deutsche Bank, Spotify, GitLab, eBay, Fastly, and HubSpot.
“We are excited to welcome PeerDB into ClickHouse,” said Aaron Katz, CEO of ClickHouse, Inc. “This acquisition aligns with our mission to empower our customers with the most advanced and efficient data analytics solutions.”
“By integrating PeerDB’s CDC technology, we are empowering Postgres developers to move even faster when building real-time data-driven applications. Now, all they have to do is configure a mirror between their existing Postgres databases and ClickHouse, and the data is available for lightning-fast analytical queries.”
ClickHouse considered several options when looking to provide a fast Postgres CDC connector for ClickPipes. This included developing its own solution by either building up from scratch or on top of an exciting open foundation. The company also considered licensing specific technologies. However, after a comprehensive evaluation, ClickHouse recognized that PeerDB provides a unique value and is an ideal fit for its platform.
According to the PeerDB blog, Postgres and Clickhouse complement each other perfectly. While Postgres has emerged as the standard for operational (OLTP) databases, ClickHouse is renowned as the fastest analytical (OLAP) database available.
Both platforms share the same open-source ethos and their synergy is evident by the number of common customers that use both systems. For customers using Postgres for transactional data, ClickHouse is the ideal complementary solution for analytical tasks due to its exceptional performance and data analysis capabilities.
PeerDB’s current open-source components will continue to be available under their existing licenses. ClickHouse will also make the production-grade Helm charts for PeerDB’s enterprise offering available as open-source. Looking ahead, we can explore more support for additional CDC data sources to facilitate a deeper integration between the two platforms.
The combined expertise of PeerDB and ClickHouse is set to drive significant advancements and expand capabilities for data-driven enterprises, who can expect broader support for various CDC data sources. In addition, the enhanced integration between PeerDB Cloud and ClickHouse Cloud will help streamline workflows and improve overall efficiency.
