Successful engagement with US Department of Defense plus an IL5 FedRAMP High computing environment paves way for strong growth
Parallel Works today announced the launch of ACTIVATE, a unified artificial intelligence (AI) & high performance computing (HPC) control plane that simplifies configuration, access and management of compute resources located on-premises and in any major cloud. This enables multi-site and hybrid computing capabilities to power unparalleled innovation across industries. ACTIVATE is ideal for applications with high computing needs, like AI model training, weather modeling, biomedical research and machine learning.
Today’s computing infrastructure is built of complex networks of on-premises and cloud environments, often with limited access to resources and constrained purchase models. With ACTIVATE, managing those environments no longer needs to be complex. Users can leverage the benefits across cloud or on-premises environments or unleash the power of hybrid computing potentials.
“R&D teams want to focus on their work, whether that is predicting hurricanes with cutting-edge weather models, or achieving the next medical breakthrough,” said Matthew Shaxted, CEO of Parallel Works. “They don’t want to worry about optimizing compute clusters or managing multiple cloud environments, but those are significant challenges that must be solved to produce the best results.”
“Parallel Works ACTIVATE lets us focus on research, not the digital plumbing that supports it,” said Jeff Steward, Principal Scientist at Orion Space Solutions, an Arcfield company. “We are using it to run a digital twin model of the Earth’s thermosphere and ionosphere, which lets us research and predict space weather more effectively and has significant ramifications for communications networks and satellites.”
The ACTIVATE platform is now generally available and includes four newly enhanced components:
- Cluster – Create and manage security-compliant HPC & AI clusters in the cloud across multiple cloud service providers.
- Access – Access any compute cluster via notebooks, browsers and virtual desktops to interactively run diverse applications like JupyterLab and ParaView.
- Workflow – Easily configure, run and scale automated workflows and scripted solutions on and across remote clusters.
- Control – Web-based user interface and API to interact with and share diverse computing resources no matter where they are located, with full security compliance.
Unlike other solutions that limit the ability of organizations to choose which applications, tools, and purchase models they can use, ACTIVATE provides teams with the flexibility to build on any compute resource or cloud and integrate any application or tool to create the most optimized, cost-effective solution for their needs, with little to no coding. The platform is certified with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure (with Oracle Cloud coming soon), and integrates with key technology partners, such as Hammerspace to provide global namespace cloud storage.
In addition to simplifying the user experience for R&D practitioners, ACTIVATE empowers computing managers to provide self-service provisioning with guardrails that enforce best practices, security compliance, and near real-time cost reporting and control. ACTIVATE offers a consistent UI across on-premises and cloud infrastructure, making migration to or between computing environments seamless. It applies Parallel Works’ years of experience in tuning and calibrating clusters to extract the best possible performance from cloud networking and storage, and as a result has been demonstrated to meet or exceed modern on-premises supercomputer performance.
Customers using ACTIVATE include:
- The Department of Defense Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and High-Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) selected Parallel Works to deploy ACTIVATE to integrate cloud-based HPC assets with existing DoD supercomputing resource centers. Parallel Works’ IL5 FedRAMP High Baseline environment expects full Authority to Operate (ATO) for DoD Users and Contractors in the upcoming months.
- Albert Einstein College of Medicine uses Parallel Works ACTIVATE to provide two collaborative environments for biomedical research – one for general use and a separate high-security environment to protect sensitive data. This makes it dramatically easier for researchers to access their computing resources and significantly improves “time to science” for medically focused researchers in their efforts ranging from genomics and pathology to drug development.
- The ACTIVATE platform is used by large Federal System Integrators to support Research to Operations (R2O) efforts for national weather and water organizations to develop and enhance their forecast models. Parallel Works empowers these practitioners with cloud-based resources and integrates seamlessly with their on-premises supercomputers.
