Robot trained to read braille at twice the speed of humans

Robot trained to read braille at twice the speed of humans

Researchers have developed a robotic sensor that incorporates artificial intelligence techniques to read braille at speeds roughly double that of most human readers. The research team, from the University of Cambridge, used machine learning algorithms to teach a robotic sensor to quickly slide over lines of braille text. The robot was able to read the braille at 315 words per minute at close to 90% accuracy. Although the robot braille reader was not developed as an assistive technology, the researchers say the high sensitivity required to read braille makes it an ideal test in the development of robot hands or…

Data management highlights governance and quality – SiliconANGLE

With data as the new currency, the key to unlocking its full potential lies in strategic data management and innovative applications. Through its Intelligent Data Management Cloud, Informatica Inc. simplifies that process by orchestrating data from various sources, integrating it into its data lake and ensuring high-quality data through its data quality module. Data management for pharma companies, discussed with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories’ Anish Agarwal and Informatica’s Joseph Sullivan. “Essentially the pharmaceutical industry today is undergoing a massive shift, largely driven by three key optics,” said Anish Agarwal (pictured, left), global head of data and analytics at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. “The…

A sleeker facial recognition technology tested on Michelangelo’s David

Many people are familiar with facial recognition systems that unlock smartphones and game systems or allow access to our bank accounts online. But the current technology can require boxy projectors and lenses. Now, researchers report in ACS' Nano Letters a sleeker 3D surface imaging system with flatter, simplified optics. In proof-of-concept demonstrations, the new system recognized the face of Michelangelo's David just as well as an existing smartphone system. 3D surface imaging is a common tool used in smartphone facial recognition, as well as in computer vision and autonomous driving. These systems typically consist of a dot projector that contains…

Innovations in depth from focus/defocus pave the way to more capable computer vision systems

Innovations in depth from focus/defocus pave the way to more capable computer vision systems

In several applications of computer vision, such as augmented reality and self-driving cars, estimating the distance between objects and the camera is an essential task. Depth from focus/defocus is one of the techniques that achieves such a process using the blur in the images as a clue. Depth from focus/defocus usually requires a stack of images of the same scene taken with different focus distances, a technique known as focal stack. Over the past decade or so, scientists have proposed many different methods for depth from focus/defocus, most of which can be divided into two categories. The first category includes…

Why insects navigate more efficiently than robots

Why insects navigate more efficiently than robots

With a brain the size of a pinhead, insects perform fantastic navigational feats. They avoid obstacles and move through small openings. How do they do this, with their limited brain power? Understanding the inner workings of an insect's brain can help us in our search towards energy-efficient computing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca of the University of Groningen demonstrates with her most recent result: a robot that acts like an insect. It's not easy to make use of the images that come in through your eyes, when deciding what your feet or wings should do. A key aspect here is the apparent…

Redpanda acquires Benthos to enhance its data streaming platform – SiliconANGLE

Redpanda Data Inc. has acquired Benthos, the developer of an open-source platform that helps organizations move information between their applications. The companies announced the deal this morning. Financial terms were not disclosed. San Francisco-based Redpanda is backed by more than $160 million in funding from Alphabet Inc.’s GV fund and other investors. It provides a platform, also called Redpanda, that can move data between applications in near-real time. A manufacturer, for example, could use the software to stream malfunction alerts from a piece of factory equipment to a cloud-based troubleshooting application. Redpanda says its platform can move data between systems…
