Evaluation of generative AI techniques for clinical report summarization | Amazon Web Services

In part 1 of this blog series, we discussed how a large language model (LLM) available on Amazon SageMaker JumpStart can be fine-tuned for the task of radiology report impression generation. Since then, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced new services such as Amazon Bedrock. This is a fully managed service that offers a choice of high-performing foundation models (FMs) from leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, Stability AI, and Amazon through a single API. Amazon Bedrock also comes with a broad set of capabilities required to build generative AI applications with security, privacy, and…

AI company developing software to detect hypersonic missiles from space

WASHINGTON — The Space Development Agency selected California-based EpiSci to develop a software tool capable of detecting hypersonic missiles in flight from satellite data, a challenging task given the extreme speeds of these weapons. Hypersonic missiles travel at speeds of at least Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound, posing a significant challenge for current defense systems. The Space Development Agency (SDA), an organization within the U.S. Space Force, is building a network of satellites in low Earth orbit with the goal to provide global indications, warning, tracking, and targeting of advanced missile threats. As many as…

Coming In June: Forrester’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies For 2024

We’re excited to announce that we’ve finalized our selections for Forrester’s top emerging technologies for 2024. We’ll spotlight the top 10 emerging technologies in our main report, which will publish in late June, and then we’ll release a report in July on technologies 11 through 20. This year, the overwhelming wave of AI technologies influenced our selection process. I often joke with clients that this year there are two types of emerging tech: those that are AI, and those that AI is accelerating. Despite the groans I get, it’s still true, even though AI fatigue among clients is setting in.…

US man used AI to generate 13,000 child sexual abuse pictures, FBI alleges

The FBI has charged a US man with creating more than 10,000 sexually explicit and abusive images of children, which he allegedly generated using a popular artificial intelligence tool. Authorities also accused the man, 42-year-old Steven Anderegg, of sending pornographic AI-made images to a 15-year-old boy over Instagram.Anderegg crafted about 13,000 “hyper-realistic images of nude and semi-clothed prepubescent children”, prosecutors stated in an indictment released on Monday, often images depicting children touching their genitals or being sexually abused by adult men. Evidence from the Wisconsin man’s laptop allegedly showed he used the popular Stable Diffusion AI model, which turns text…

Challenges in enterprise generative AI

This post is different from past essays, which were more future-oriented. This one is grounded in today’s challenges in scaling AI. Read on to learn about the recurring challenges I’ve heard. I am also organizing the Enterprise Generative AI Forum which is designed for both technical and non-technical folks and will cover topics like product, pricing, positioning, and more.It has been almost one year since ChatGPT was released. In the initial six months, the community grappled with understanding the capabilities of foundation or generative AI models. The number of in-person AI events happening in Bay Area grew from just 10…

AI-assisted writing is quietly booming in academic journals. Here’s why that’s OK

If you search Google Scholar for the phrase “as an AI language model”, you’ll find plenty of AI research literature and also some rather suspicious results. For example, one paper on agricultural technology says: As an AI language model, I don’t have direct access to current research articles or studies. However, I can provide you with an overview of some recent trends and advancements … Obvious gaffes like this aren’t the only signs that researchers are increasingly turning to generative AI tools when writing up their research. A recent study examined the frequency of certain words in academic writing (such…
