Costco says it’s not ready to raise its membership fee — for now

Costco is once again kicking the can on raising its membership fee."I would really kind of revert back to some of the comments that Richard shared previously," CFO Gary Millerchip told investors Thursday, referring to his predecessor, Richard Galanti, who said last year that a Costco membership fee increase would "happen at some point.""There's nothing about anything that we see within how the business is performing that's changing our view on that," Millerchip said. The wholesale club last raised fees in 2017, and analysts have noted that an increase is long overdue, based on the typical five- to six-year interval…

BioBERT-based Deep Learning and Merged ChemProt-DrugProt for Enhanced Biomedical Relation Extraction

BioBERT-based Deep Learning and Merged ChemProt-DrugProt for Enhanced Biomedical Relation Extraction

arXiv:2405.18605v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper presents a methodology for enhancing relation extraction from biomedical texts, focusing specifically on chemical-gene interactions. Leveraging the BioBERT model and a multi-layer fully connected network architecture, our approach integrates the ChemProt and DrugProt datasets using a novel merging strategy. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate significant performance improvements, particularly in CPR groups shared between the datasets. The findings underscore the importance of dataset merging in augmenting sample counts and improving model accuracy. Moreover, the study highlights the potential of automated information extraction in biomedical research and clinical practice. Source link lol

Get Started On Using Generative AI In ERP

Get Started On Using Generative AI In ERP

The biggest trend of the summer is yet again proving to be generative AI (genAI). Unlike other passing fads, however, genAI is here to stay. Understandably, customers are concerned about falling behind their peers and also worried about falling for expensive, empty promises made by vendors. What’s just hype, and what are actual use cases they can start implementing? While genAI in enterprise resource planning (ERP) is still in its early days, here are a few considerations to consider: Understand the near-term benefits. GenAI will free finance and operations employees from cumbersome tasks such as narrative reporting, customer collection emails,…

$10m prize launched for team that can truly talk to the animals

In the Dr Dolittle books and films, the ability to “talk to the animals” captured the imagination. Now scientists are being offered a $10m prize to create real conversations. The Coller Dolittle Challenge for Interspecies Two-Way Communication has been launched by the Jeremy Coller Foundation and Tel Aviv University. While the use of AI is not obligatory, the team say the technology can boost almost all proposals.“Just as the Rosetta Stone unlocked the secrets of the hieroglyphics, I am convinced that the power of AI can help us to unlock interspecies conversation,” said Jeremy Coller, chair of the foundation. The team say…

IBM Unveils watsonx BI assistant to Simplify Business Decision-Making

via Shutterstock As the business world eagerly embraces the potential of GenAI, many companies are discovering that there are still lots of challenges along the way. One of the key challenges is complexity.  Companies are struggling to use decision-making tools because they are too complex. This is evident in the lack of growth in the adoption of business intelligence (BI) and data analytics tools. The percentage of employees actively using BI and analytics tools currently stands at only 25% on average.  (Laborant/Shutterstock) Despite advances in technology and investment in literacy programs to educate employees on the use of data, the…

Saas Startup Funding Falls

Saas Startup Funding Falls

Software as a service — long a favored sector among startup investors — has seen cooling interest in recent quarters even as overall U.S. venture funding has rebounded a bit. So far this year, SaaS and enterprise software companies have raised $4.7 billion in seed- through growth-stage financing, per Crunchbase data. That puts 2024 on track to come in far below last year’s $17.4 billion annual tally — which was itself the lowest total in years. For perspective, we charted out funding and deal counts from 2019 through 2024. A tough week for enterprise software stocks Startup funding declines come amid…
