The Uncanny Rise of the World’s First AI Beauty Pageant

The Uncanny Rise of the World’s First AI Beauty Pageant

What makes an AI pageant different, Friedman asserts, is that Fanvue’s contestants are products of their creators. “They’re drawing on all these stereotypes that we have about what a ‘beautiful woman’ is,” she says, “and people who tend to use AI might have a different idea of what an attractive woman might be. She might have pink hair, but she’ll still be within the realm of traditional beauty, with a thin body or not a lot of moles on her face.”The creators of AI model Aitana Lopez (above) are serving as judges for the World AI Creator Awards beauty pageant.…

Enhancing Performance for Highly Imbalanced Medical Data via Data Regularization in a Federated Learning Setting

Enhancing Performance for Highly Imbalanced Medical Data via Data Regularization in a Federated Learning Setting

[Submitted on 30 May 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Enhancing Performance for Highly Imbalanced Medical Data via Data Regularization in a Federated Learning Setting, by Georgios Tsoumplekas and 4 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:The increased availability of medical data has significantly impacted healthcare by enabling the application of machine / deep learning approaches in various instances. However, medical datasets are usually small and scattered across multiple providers, suffer from high class-imbalance, and are subject to stringent data privacy constraints. In this paper, the application of a data regularization algorithm, suitable for learning under high class-imbalance,…

Samsung sues Oura to block Oura from suing Samsung over the Galaxy Ring

Samsung sues Oura to block Oura from suing Samsung over the Galaxy Ring

Samsung has filed a lawsuit against Oura to try to head off intellectual property disputes as the Galaxy Ring launch draws near. The suit notes that Oura has used its patent portfolio to sue smaller wearable tech competitors and has hinted it may do the same against the much larger Samsung. Welcome to the weird modern world of mega-corporations suing startups to prevent them from filing suits of their own.“Oura’s actions and public statements demonstrate that Oura will continue asserting patent infringement against other entrants into the U.S. smart ring market, including Samsung,” the lawsuit, first reported on by The…

OpenAI forms safety and security committee to oversee AI projects as it trains next model – SiliconANGLE

OpenAI today announced the formation of a committee that will be tasked with ensuring its machine learning research is carried out safely. The Safety and Security Committee, as the panel is called, comprises nine members. It will be led by OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and three other directors, including board Chair Bret Taylor. The committee’s five other members are OpenAI engineering executives Aleksander Madry, Lilian Weng, John Schulman, Matt Knight and Jakub Pachocki. The panel’s formation comes a few days after word emerged that the GPT-4 developer had disbanded an internal team dedicated to AI safety. The Superalignment…

Physically Compatible 3D Object Modeling from a Single Image

Physically Compatible 3D Object Modeling from a Single Image

arXiv:2405.20510v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present a computational framework that transforms single images into 3D physical objects. The visual geometry of a physical object in an image is determined by three orthogonal attributes: mechanical properties, external forces, and rest-shape geometry. Existing single-view 3D reconstruction methods often overlook this underlying composition, presuming rigidity or neglecting external forces. Consequently, the reconstructed objects fail to withstand real-world physical forces, resulting in instability or undesirable deformation -- diverging from their intended designs as depicted in the image. Our optimization framework addresses this by embedding physical compatibility into the reconstruction process. We explicitly decompose…

Crystal Sonic wins Lam Capital venture competition with $250K investment

Time's almost up! There's only one week left to request an invite to The AI Impact Tour on June 5th. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to explore various methods for auditing AI models. Find out how you can attend here. Chip-related startup Crystal Sonic won the third Lam Capital Venture Competition as well as a $250,000 investment from Lam Capital. The winner was announced at the Enabling Future Semiconductors event at Lam Research’s headquarters in Fremont, California. made the announcement. Crystal Sonic helps semiconductor manufacturers reduce waste and cost by enabling thin device lift-off and substrate re-use. That…

Transfer Q Star: Principled Decoding for LLM Alignment

Transfer Q Star: Principled Decoding for LLM Alignment

arXiv:2405.20495v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Aligning foundation models is essential for their safe and trustworthy deployment. However, traditional fine-tuning methods are computationally intensive and require updating billions of model parameters. A promising alternative, alignment via decoding, adjusts the response distribution directly without model updates to maximize a target reward $r$, thus providing a lightweight and adaptable framework for alignment. However, principled decoding methods rely on oracle access to an optimal Q-function ($Q^*$), which is often unavailable in practice. Hence, prior SoTA methods either approximate this $Q^*$ using $Q^{pi_{texttt{sft}}}$ (derived from the reference $texttt{SFT}$ model) or rely on short-term rewards, resulting…

Computex 2024: The Battle for AI Copilot PCs Begins – EE Times

//php echo do_shortcode('[responsivevoice_button voice="US English Male" buttontext="Listen to Post"]') ?> Ahead of the opening of Computex 2024 here in Taipei, the pre-show keynotes had two clear key themes: one was the so-called rebirth of the PC with a whole raft of AI copilot PCs due to come on the market within weeks; and the second was the importance of Taiwan in this ecosystem through the whole vale chain, from chip to consumer product. While Nvidia’s Jensen Huang took to the stage on Sunday night, AMD’s Lisa Su kicked off Monday’s keynotes here, followed by Arm’s Rene Haas and Qualcomm’s Cristiano…
