Drones could revolutionise the construction industry, supporting a new UK housing boom

Drones could revolutionise the construction industry, supporting a new UK housing boom

The UK’s new Labour government has pledged to build 1.5 million homes during its first term in office. To achieve this, it promises planning reform and the reintroduction of local housing targets. Yet little attention has been given to the role of new technologies. Drones have the potential to transform the construction industry in the UK. However, our recent study in ACM Journal on Responsible Computing reveals that laws governing commercial drone deployment in the UK remain conflicting, chaotic, and sometimes, contradictory. A drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), is a remote-controlled flying machine often equipped with a video camera…

Tiled Bit Networks: Sub-Bit Neural Network Compression Through Reuse of Learnable Binary Vectors

Tiled Bit Networks: Sub-Bit Neural Network Compression Through Reuse of Learnable Binary Vectors

arXiv:2407.12075v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Binary Neural Networks (BNNs) enable efficient deep learning by saving on storage and computational costs. However, as the size of neural networks continues to grow, meeting computational requirements remains a challenge. In this work, we propose a new form of quantization to tile neural network layers with sequences of bits to achieve sub-bit compression of binary-weighted neural networks. The method learns binary vectors (i.e. tiles) to populate each layer of a model via aggregation and reshaping operations. During inference, the method reuses a single tile per layer to represent the full tensor. We employ the…

Relational Representation Distillation

Relational Representation Distillation

[Submitted on 16 Jul 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Relational Representation Distillation, by Nikolaos Giakoumoglou and 1 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:Knowledge distillation (KD) is an effective method for transferring knowledge from a large, well-trained teacher model to a smaller, more efficient student model. Despite its success, one of the main challenges in KD is ensuring the efficient transfer of complex knowledge while maintaining the student's computational efficiency. Unlike previous works that applied contrastive objectives promoting explicit negative instances, we introduce Relational Representation Distillation (RRD). Our approach leverages pairwise similarities to explore and reinforce the…

Microsoft is bringing Designer’s AI editor to Windows 11’s Photos app – gHacks Tech News

Microsoft is bringing Designer’s AI editor to Windows 11’s Photos app – gHacks Tech News

Microsoft has announced that it is adding some new AI features to the Photos app on Windows 11. The options will be powered by Microsoft Designer's AI. As you may be aware, the Microsoft Photos app already has a button that lets you edit an image in Designer online. Clicking on the button opens https://designer.microsoft.com in your web browser, with the image loaded and ready for editing. This is the experience that Microsoft is changing, the company wants to allow users to edit the images with Designer directly. Microsoft Photos app gains AI-powered editing tools The Photos app is gaining…

OpenAI Slashes the Cost of Using Its AI With a “Mini” Model

OpenAI today announced a cut-price “mini” model that it says will allow more companies and programs to tap into its artificial intelligence. The new model, called GPT-4o mini and available starting today, is 60 percent cheaper than OpenAI’s most inexpensive existing model while offering higher performance, the company says.OpenAI characterizes the move as part of an effort to make AI “as broadly accessible as possible,” but it also reflects growing competition among AI cloud providers as well as rising interest in small and free open source AI models. Meta is expected to debut the largest version of its very capable…

Follow-Up Questions Improve Documents Generated by Large Language Models

Follow-Up Questions Improve Documents Generated by Large Language Models

arXiv:2407.12017v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This study investigates the impact of Large Language Models generating follow up questions in response to user requests for short text documents. Users provided prompts requesting documents they would like the AI to produce. The AI then generated questions to clarify the user needs before generating the requested documents. Users answered the questions and then indicated their preference between a document generated using both the initial prompt and the questions and answers, and a document generated using only the initial prompt, and gave feedback about their experience with the question-answering process. The findings of this…

Tech executives confident in AI skills, but adoption barriers persist

Tech executives confident in AI skills, but adoption barriers persist

While executives express high confidence in their organisations’ AI capabilities, they simultaneously acknowledge significant barriers to further adoption. Research from Zartis found that 85% of UK tech executives rate their existing workforce’s combined AI knowledge and expertise as ‘skilled’, with over half (51%) considering it ‘highly skilled’. This confidence, however, is juxtaposed against concerns about obstacles preventing wider AI implementation. AI adoption is nearly universal among UK tech companies, with 94% of executives reporting some form of AI use in their organisations. The remaining 6% are still in the exploration or research phase. Notably, not a single respondent claimed to…
