I lie about my age, and I don’t see anything wrong with that

I've lied about my age for so long that, on any given day, I forget exactly how old I am. I could do the math and work it out, but why would I want to do that? I don't celebrate my birthday, and until I was outed by their father, I lied to my kids or avoided answering the "How old are you, Mommy?" question. Their father knew I didn't want anyone to know because I'd avoided telling him my age when we got together. It was a subterfuge I'd have happily maintained indefinitely, but he accidentally saw a police…

AI stack attack: Navigating the generative tech maze

AI stack attack: Navigating the generative tech maze

We want to hear from you! Take our quick AI survey and share your insights on the current state of AI, how you’re implementing it, and what you expect to see in the future. Learn More In mere months, the generative AI technology stack has undergone a striking metamorphosis. Menlo Ventures’ January 2024 market map depicted a tidy four-layer framework. By late May, Sapphire Ventures’ visualization exploded into a labyrinth of more than 200 companies spread across multiple categories. This rapid expansion lays bare the breakneck pace of innovation—and the mounting challenges facing IT decision-makers. Technical considerations collide with a…

Continual Learning Optimizations for Auto-regressive Decoder of Multilingual ASR systems

Continual Learning Optimizations for Auto-regressive Decoder of Multilingual ASR systems

arXiv:2407.03645v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Continual Learning (CL) involves fine-tuning pre-trained models with new data while maintaining the performance on the pre-trained data. This is particularly relevant for expanding multilingual ASR (MASR) capabilities. However, existing CL methods, mainly designed for computer vision and reinforcement learning tasks, often yield sub-optimal results when directly applied to MASR. We hypothesise that this is because CL of the auto-regressive decoder in the MASR model is difficult. To verify this, we propose four optimizations on the decoder. They include decoder-layer gradient surgery, freezing unused token embeddings, suppressing output of newly added tokens, and learning rate…

OpenAI Secrets Stolen in 2023 After Internal Forum Was Hacked

OpenAI Secrets Stolen in 2023 After Internal Forum Was Hacked

The online forum OpenAI employees use for confidential internal communications was breached last year, anonymous sources have told The New York Times. Hackers lifted details about the design of the company’s AI technologies from forum posts, but they did not infiltrate the systems where OpenAI actually houses and builds its AI. OpenAI executives announced the incident to the whole company during an all-hands meeting in April 2023, and also informed the board of directors. It was not, however, disclosed to the public because no information about customers or partners had been stolen. Executives did not inform law enforcement, according to…

Human-in-the-Loop and Adaptive Prompting Are the Future of AI Development

Human-in-the-Loop and Adaptive Prompting Are the Future of AI Development

AI doesn't always produce optimal outputs. We're seeing it all the time. And contrary to popular belief, it's not because the AI system is flawed. The issue is that AI is now accessible to everyone and ChatGPT alone has 180 million active users. Create a ChatGPT account, and you can access a system that will pretty much tell you anything you need it to…but it doesn't always make sense. Creating the desired outputs is a science and an art. Dzone writer and developer evangelist Pavan Belagatti provided an insightful overview of prompt engineering in this article. As he points out, there are…

Florida residents were shocked to see a manatee swimming in their human-made lake. A biologist thinks she knows how it got there.

Florida residents were shocked to see a manatee swimming in their human-made lake. A biologist thinks she knows how it got there.

South Florida residents recently noticed an unusual new neighbor in their artificial lake: a manatee.Last week, a resident of the Cedarwoods neighborhood in Pembroke Pines took video footage of the marine mammal swimming around, according to news station WPLG Local 10. A couple also spotted the manatee in late June, and they believe it may have had a baby with it."This is the first one we've seen on the lake," Bill Barnett, one of the residents who filmed the sea cow, told the news station. How did the manatee reach an inland lake? The artificial lake is about 10 miles from the…
