AI helps lighten the load on the electric grid – without skimping on people’s energy use

My colleagues and I have developed an artificial intelligence system that helps buildings shift their energy use to times when the electric grid is cleaner. I’m an engineer who studies and develops smart buildings. My lab created Merlin, which learns how people use energy in their homes and adjust energy controls like thermostats to meet their needs while at the same time minimizing the impact on the grid. The system can learn on one set of buildings and occupants and be used in buildings with different controls and energy use patterns. We dubbed it Merlin after King Arthur’s legendary magician…

Cybertruck crash and fire reportedly causes first fatality

A Tesla Cybertruck veered off a Texas road and crashed into a culvert, bursting into flames and killing the driver, KHOU 11 Houston reported. It appears to be the first fatality involving Tesla's new electric pickup and has triggered a probe by the NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration), according to Reuters. The driver has not yet been identified. It's not clear what caused the accident, but it wasn't related to Tesla's Autopilot as the Cybertruck has yet to gain that feature. Video from the scene shows that the vehicle was nearly completely consumed by the fire, which thwarted identification of…

Financial literacy is not always taught in school. Here’s how parents can prepare their kids to budget and invest wisely.

Financial literacy is not always taught in school. Here’s how parents can prepare their kids to budget and invest wisely.

Financial stability can directly impact a person's quality of life. Yet ensuring young people develop the financial skills to achieve economic success as adults is not prioritized in all K-12 educational settings.According to the California Department of Education, only 26 states in the United States require high school students to take a course in personal finance. California just recently made this requirement official; in the press release announcing the agreement, Gov. Gavin Newsom said, "Saving for the future, making investments, and spending wisely are lifelong skills that young adults need to learn before they start their careers, not after."However, research…

Artificial Neural Networks for Photonic Applications: From Algorithms to Implementation

Artificial Neural Networks for Photonic Applications: From Algorithms to Implementation

[Submitted on 2 Aug 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Artificial Neural Networks for Photonic Applications: From Algorithms to Implementation, by Pedro Freire and 2 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:This tutorial-review on applications of artificial neural networks in photonics targets a broad audience, ranging from optical research and engineering communities to computer science and applied mathematics. We focus here on the research areas at the interface between these disciplines, attempting to find the right balance between technical details specific to each domain and overall clarity. First, we briefly recall key properties and peculiarities of some core…

Intel Has Lost Wall Street’s Patience as Headwinds Keep Mounting

Intel Has Lost Wall Street’s Patience as Headwinds Keep Mounting

After another catastrophic earnings report, Intel Corp. bulls are increasingly few and far between on Wall Street.Intel shares have shed nearly a third of their value since the firm gave a grim growth forecast, announced plans to slash 15,000 jobs, and suspended a dividend that has been in place since 1992. The report was the latest in a series of discouraging updates, and underlined the myriad headwinds facing the chipmaker as it struggles to execute an ambitious turnaround and compete in the artificial intelligence era. From Recognition to Prediction: Leveraging Sequence Reasoning for Action Anticipation

From Recognition to Prediction: Leveraging Sequence Reasoning for Action Anticipation

arXiv:2408.02769v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The action anticipation task refers to predicting what action will happen based on observed videos, which requires the model to have a strong ability to summarize the present and then reason about the future. Experience and common sense suggest that there is a significant correlation between different actions, which provides valuable prior knowledge for the action anticipation task. However, previous methods have not effectively modeled this underlying statistical relationship. To address this issue, we propose a novel end-to-end video modeling architecture that utilizes attention mechanisms, named Anticipation via Recognition and Reasoning (ARR). ARR decomposes the…

Intermediate direct preference optimization

Intermediate direct preference optimization

arXiv:2408.02923v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We propose the intermediate direct preference optimization (DPO) method to calculate the DPO loss at selected intermediate layers as an auxiliary loss for finetuning large language models (LLMs). The conventional DPO method fine-tunes a supervised fine-tuning (SFT) model by calculating the DPO loss using logits from the final layer. In our intermediate DPO approach, DPO losses are calculated using the logits from K-selected intermediate layers and averaged to obtain the intermediate DPO loss. For training the intermediate DPO model, the final loss is obtained by calculating the weighted sum of the DPO and intermediate DPO…
