Nvidia drops support for old CPUs that don’t support POPCNT – gHacks Tech News

Nvidia has announced that it will no longer offer its display drivers on old CPUs that don't support POPCNT. The good news is that it should not affect most modern computers. Users who try to install the latest GPU drivers on unsupported systems may experience a blue screen of death (BSOD) with an error that says SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED. Nvidia had published a knowledgebase article in June, confirming that its Windows drivers for older CPUs is reaching end-of-life support. The last Nvidia drivers to support the legacy processors are version 554 release drivers, so if you have a…

What to do if you catch your employee on a quiet vacation, according to an HR exec

What to do if you catch your employee on a quiet vacation, according to an HR exec

Quiet vacationing — employees secretly taking time off or using tools to circumvent monitoring software — is rising.Nolan Church, cofounder and CEO at FairComp and Continuum and the former Head of Talent at DoorDash, says the erosion of manager trust in employees leads to this bad behavior."Quiet vacationing is happening for two big reasons: Bad managers who manage to the lowest common denominator and the adoption of pedantic parenthood traits into the working world — especially in tech."In a 2023 survey of 1,000 US business leaders by ResumeBuilder.com, 96% of respondents working at organizations with a primarily remote or hybrid…

Parkinson’s Disease Detection from Resting State EEG using Multi-Head Graph Structure Learning with Gradient Weighted Graph Attention Explanations

Parkinson’s Disease Detection from Resting State EEG using Multi-Head Graph Structure Learning with Gradient Weighted Graph Attention Explanations

[Submitted on 1 Aug 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Parkinson's Disease Detection from Resting State EEG using Multi-Head Graph Structure Learning with Gradient Weighted Graph Attention Explanations, by Christopher Neves and 2 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that has severe impacts on an individual's quality of life. Compared with structural and functional MRI-based biomarkers for the disease, electroencephalography (EEG) can provide more accessible alternatives for clinical insights. While deep learning (DL) techniques have provided excellent outcomes, many techniques fail to model spatial information and dynamic brain connectivity, and…

Reclaiming Residual Knowledge: A Novel Paradigm to Low-Bit Quantization

Reclaiming Residual Knowledge: A Novel Paradigm to Low-Bit Quantization

arXiv:2408.00923v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper explores a novel paradigm in low-bit (i.e. 4-bits or lower) quantization, differing from existing state-of-the-art methods, by framing optimal quantization as an architecture search problem within convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). Our framework, dubbed textbf{CoRa} (Optimal Quantization Residual textbf{Co}nvolutional Operator Low-textbf{Ra}nk Adaptation), is motivated by two key aspects. Firstly, quantization residual knowledge, i.e. the lost information between floating-point weights and quantized weights, has long been neglected by the research community. Reclaiming the critical residual knowledge, with an infinitesimal extra parameter cost, can reverse performance degradation without training. Secondly, state-of-the-art quantization frameworks search for optimal…

UNER: A Unified Prediction Head for Named Entity Recognition in Visually-rich Documents

UNER: A Unified Prediction Head for Named Entity Recognition in Visually-rich Documents

arXiv:2408.01038v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The recognition of named entities in visually-rich documents (VrD-NER) plays a critical role in various real-world scenarios and applications. However, the research in VrD-NER faces three major challenges: complex document layouts, incorrect reading orders, and unsuitable task formulations. To address these challenges, we propose a query-aware entity extraction head, namely UNER, to collaborate with existing multi-modal document transformers to develop more robust VrD-NER models. The UNER head considers the VrD-NER task as a combination of sequence labeling and reading order prediction, effectively addressing the issues of discontinuous entities in documents. Experimental evaluations on diverse datasets…

The best ergonomic keyboards for 2024

The best ergonomic keyboards for 2024

Spending hours at a computer can be rough on your body. If your wrists, shoulders, neck or other areas have started complaining, you might want to get an ergonomic keyboard. The ergonomic design shifts the position of your arms and wrists, which, for some, can relieve tension and strain. After using a fully split keyboard for a number of months, I feel an improvement in my shoulder tension. But split boards come with a learning curve. Semi-split, or Alice boards, are easier to get used to while still opening up space between your elbows. Other factors, like tenting and a…

He says AI can tell your politics and sexuality by reading your face. Is he right?

Michal Kosinski knows exactly how he sounds when he talks about his research. And how it sounds is not great.A psychologist at Stanford University, Kosinski is a specialist in psychometrics — a field that attempts to measure the facets of the human mind. For more than a decade, his work has freaked people right the hell out. In study after study, Kosinski has made scarily plausible claims that machine-learning algorithms of artificial intelligence can discern deeply private things about us — our intelligence, our sexual preferences, our political beliefs — using little more than our Facebook likes and photographs of…
