Optical Music Recognition in Manuscripts from the Ricordi Archive

Optical Music Recognition in Manuscripts from the Ricordi Archive

[Submitted on 14 Aug 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Optical Music Recognition in Manuscripts from the Ricordi Archive, by Federico Simonetta and 3 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:The Ricordi archive, a prestigious collection of significant musical manuscripts from renowned opera composers such as Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini, has been digitized. This process has allowed us to automatically extract samples that represent various musical elements depicted on the manuscripts, including notes, staves, clefs, erasures, and composer's annotations, among others. To distinguish between digitization noise and actual music elements, a subset of these images was meticulously grouped…

Goldfish: Monolingual Language Models for 350 Languages

Goldfish: Monolingual Language Models for 350 Languages

arXiv:2408.10441v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: For many low-resource languages, the only available language models are large multilingual models trained on many languages simultaneously. However, using FLORES perplexity as a metric, we find that these models perform worse than bigrams for many languages (e.g. 24% of languages in XGLM 4.5B; 43% in BLOOM 7.1B). To facilitate research that focuses on low-resource languages, we pre-train and release Goldfish, a suite of monolingual autoregressive Transformer language models up to 125M parameters for 350 languages. The Goldfish reach lower FLORES perplexities than BLOOM, XGLM, and MaLA-500 on 98 of 204 FLORES languages, despite each…

Paramount+ annual subscriptions are half off right now

Streaming prices love to go up, but here’s a rare instance in which one is going down. Paramount+ is lowering prices on its two annual plans for a limited time. This is the basic subscription that allows access to Paramount+ programming with ads.Paramount+It doesn’t, however, offer access to Showtime. For that, the cost doubles to $60 per year. In addition to the secondary streaming service, this plan offers live CBS streaming and the ability to download shows to a mobile device. This is also an…

Three authors have filed a class-action lawsuit against Anthropic, claiming the company used pirated versions of their books to train its AI chatbot, Claude. Recogni, backed by BMW, Bosch, and Mayfield, has introduced a new computing method that could make its AI training and inferencing chips smaller, faster, and more cost-effective. India's antitrust body flagged competition concerns over Reliance and Walt Disney's $8.5 billion merger, which would dominate cricket rights and impact the $28 billion media sector. The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it would impose additional duties of up to 36.3% on Chinese-made electric vehicles following its anti-subsidy…

Musk had initially listed the property for $9.5 million — which the couple could not afford.Walker-Pearlman and Hunter financed their 2020 deal with a $6.7 million loan provided by Musk. The billionaire reached an agreement…

Kolmogorov Arnold Networks in Fraud Detection: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice

Kolmogorov Arnold Networks in Fraud Detection: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice

arXiv:2408.10263v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Kolmogorov Arnold Networks (KAN) are highly efficient in inference and can handle complex patterns once trained, making them desirable for production environments and ensuring a fast service experience in the finance and electronic shopping industries. However, we found that KAN, in general, is not suitable for fraud detection problems. We also discovered a quick method to determine whether a problem is solvable by KAN: if the data can be effectively separated using spline interpolation with varying intervals after applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to reduce the data dimensions to two, KAN can outperform most machine…
