Adaptive Knowledge Distillation for Classification of Hand Images using Explainable Vision Transformers

Adaptive Knowledge Distillation for Classification of Hand Images using Explainable Vision Transformers

arXiv:2408.10503v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Assessing the forensic value of hand images involves the use of unique features and patterns present in an individual's hand. The human hand has distinct characteristics, such as the pattern of veins, fingerprints, and the geometry of the hand itself. This paper investigates the use of vision transformers (ViTs) for classification of hand images. We use explainability tools to explore the internal representations of ViTs and assess their impact on the model outputs. Utilizing the internal understanding of ViTs, we introduce distillation methods that allow a student model to adaptively extract knowledge from a teacher…

Dua Lipa is a poet too – on National Poetry Day, let’s celebrate the power of words to move us

Dua Lipa is a poet too – on National Poetry Day, let’s celebrate the power of words to move us

The significance and solace of poetry is closer than you think, I tell budding authors as they arrive at class with headphones on, glued to TikTok trends, or scrolling through Instagram feeds. Given their youth, they begin to air archaic ideas about what poetry is: something that’s difficult to decipher, hard to write. Asked to name a poet, their minds often retreat into the historical darkness where they locate Shakespeare. Perhaps a name surfaces from an era a little closer to our own – Emily Dickinson, say, or Sylvia Plath. It’s then I offer them Dua Lipa and Benson Boone,…

Cyber Security and IT Leadership: A Growing Threat to Australia’s Renewable Energy Efforts

Cyber Security and IT Leadership: A Growing Threat to Australia’s Renewable Energy Efforts

Australia is on a mission to become a more energy-efficient nation. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency recently announced a $100 million initiative to explore and expand solar energy capabilities. Further investments in energy storage, pumped hydro, and low-carbon grids may prove just as significant. However, the nation must also address an underlying challenge: the integration of robust IT and software foundations within the OT environments that run the grids. Without these, Australia could struggle to fully realise its renewable energy ambitions. The convergence of OT and IT OT refers to the hardware and software that detects or causes changes through…

Snowflake Arctic models are now available in Amazon SageMaker JumpStart | Amazon Web Services

This post is co-written with Matt Marzillo from Snowflake. Today, we are excited to announce that the Snowflake Arctic Instruct model is available through Amazon SageMaker JumpStart to deploy and run inference. Snowflake Arctic is a family of enterprise-grade large language models (LLMs) built by Snowflake to cater to the needs of enterprise users, exhibiting exceptional capabilities (as shown in the following benchmarks) in SQL querying, coding, and accurately following instructions. SageMaker JumpStart is a machine learning (ML) hub that provides access to algorithms, models, and ML solutions so you can quickly get started with ML. In this post, we…

Hydrogels can play Pong by ‘remembering’ previous patterns of electrical simulation

Hydrogels can play Pong by ‘remembering’ previous patterns of electrical simulation

Non-living hydrogels can play the video game Pong and improve their gameplay with more experience, researchers report August 23 in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports Physical Science. The researchers hooked hydrogels up to a virtual game environment and then applied a feedback loop between the hydrogel's paddle -- encoded by the distribution of charged particles within the hydrogel -- and the ball's position -- encoded by electrical stimulation. With practice, the hydrogel's accuracy improved by up to 10%, resulting in longer rallies. The researchers say that this demonstrates the ability of non-living materials to use "memory" to update their…

But I changed my mind…
