Language model ‘UroBot’ surpasses the accuracy of experienced urologists

Scientists at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), together with doctors from the Urological Clinic of the Mannheim University Hospital, have developed and successfully tested a chatbot based on artificial intelligence. "UroBot" was able to answer questions from the urology specialist examination with a high degree of accuracy, surpassing both other language models and the accuracy of experienced urologists. The model justifies its answers in detail based on the guidelines. With advances in personalized oncology, urological guidelines are becoming increasingly complex. Whether in the tumor board, on the ward or in the practice, a precise second-opinion system for medical decisions…

Robot radiotherapy could improve treatments for eye disease

Researchers from King's, with doctors at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, have successfully used a new robot system to improve treatment for debilitating eye disease. The custom-built robot was used to treat wet neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), administering a one-off, minimally invasive dose of radiation, followed by patients' routine treatment with injections into their eye. In the landmark trial, published today in The Lancet, it was found that patients then needed fewer injections to effectively control the disease, potentially saving around 1.8 million injections per year around the world. Wet AMD is a debilitating eye disease, where abnormal…

AI can speed design of health software

Artificial intelligence helped clinicians to accelerate the design of diabetes prevention software, a new study finds. Publishing online March 6 in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the study examined the capabilities of a form of artificial intelligence (AI) called generative AI or GenAI, which predicts likely options for the next word in any sentence based on how billions of people used words in context on the internet. A side effect of this next-word prediction is that the generative AI "chatbots" like chatGPT can generate replies to questions in realistic language, and produce clear summaries of complex texts. Led by…

AI can now detect COVID-19 in lung ultrasound images

Artificial intelligence can spot COVID-19 in lung ultrasound images much like facial recognition software can spot a face in a crowd, new research shows. The findings boost AI-driven medical diagnostics and bring health care professionals closer to being able to quickly diagnose patients with COVID-19 and other pulmonary diseases with algorithms that comb through ultrasound images to identify signs of disease. The findings, newly published in Communications Medicine, culminate an effort that started early in the pandemic when clinicians needed tools to rapidly assess legions of patients in overwhelmed emergency rooms. "We developed this automated detection tool to help doctors…
