Connecting to IRC with Halloy

Halloy is a new IRC client written in Rust that is fast with good theming. Here is how I set up a connection to an irc channel with Halloy and here is how to config Halloy for Rizon. After downloading Halloy, I referred to the documentation. Halloy uses a config.toml file, easily edited in code editor like VSCode. By default this is next to the Halloy installation, for me, in AppData/Roaming on Windows. Halloy has command bar on the bottom left of the application window, and opening that gives options including "Configuration: Open config directory". Basic connection to Rizon In…

An ex-California official quietly stole over $1.5 million of water in a heist that lasted decades, but mysteries remain

A former California official pleaded guilty to conspiring to steal more than $1.5 million of water, but the decadeslong water heist case still has more questions than answers. Dennis Falaschi served as the general manager of the Panoche Water District in Fresno and Merced Counties, located in central California, from around 1986 to 2017. The public water district bought water from the federal government and collected drainage water from farms, both of which it then legally sold to farmers in the area, according to a statement issued by the US attorney's office for the Eastern District of California on Tuesday. But…

WeatherFormer: A Pretrained Encoder Model for Learning Robust Weather Representations from Small Datasets

WeatherFormer: A Pretrained Encoder Model for Learning Robust Weather Representations from Small Datasets

arXiv:2405.17455v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper introduces WeatherFormer, a transformer encoder-based model designed to learn robust weather features from minimal observations. It addresses the challenge of modeling complex weather dynamics from small datasets, a bottleneck for many prediction tasks in agriculture, epidemiology, and climate science. WeatherFormer was pretrained on a large pretraining dataset comprised of 39 years of satellite measurements across the Americas. With a novel pretraining task and fine-tuning, WeatherFormer achieves state-of-the-art performance in county-level soybean yield prediction and influenza forecasting. Technical innovations include a unique spatiotemporal encoding that captures geographical, annual, and seasonal variations, adapting the transformer…

Evaluating Large Language Models with Giskard in MLflow

Over the last few years, Large Language Models (LLMs) have been reshaping the field of natural language, thanks to their transformer-based architectures and their extensive training on massive datasets. In particular, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) has experienced a notable rise, swiftly becoming the prevailing method for effectively exploring and retrieving enterprise data by combining vector databases and LLMs. Some of its common applications involve developing customer support bots, internal knowledge graphs, or Q&A systems. This tremendous progress, however, has also given rise to various challenges, with one of the most prominent being the complicated task of testing and validating their generated outputs. How…

Consumers, Meet Your Virtual Match: Your Digital Double

How many times has an algorithm gotten something wrong about you? There are countless examples, ranging from funny (Amazon thinking that you need more toilet seats) to incredibly harmful (Google Photos labeling Black people as gorillas). Algorithms dictate so much of what we experience, including what we discover via product recommendations, what we see and buy via search results, and how much we pay via dynamic pricing, so it’s particularly frustrating when they misunderstand us. Digital Doubles Make Algorithms Work For You Imagine if you could build an algorithm that makes algorithms work for you. You may not have to…
