The Chinese economy is so bad, even Chinese people can’t be enticed into buying dirt-cheap mega-sale items

China's biggest sales, which have historically raked in billions of dollars, appear to finally be losing their chokehold on the Chinese market. These sales, characterized by steep discounts, have offered all sorts of retail products, from iPhones to designer bags, at fractions of their original prices. And consumers usually bite. This year, they've started to hold off on going all in on big spending. The 2024 run of the 618 sale, held by e-commerce giant JD.com and other online retailers like Alibaba Group's Tmall and Pinduoduo, suffered its first dip in sales in eight years, retail data provider Syntun estimated. The shopping festival,…

Fair Submodular Cover

Fair Submodular Cover

arXiv:2407.04804v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Submodular optimization is a fundamental problem with many applications in machine learning, often involving decision-making over datasets with sensitive attributes such as gender or age. In such settings, it is often desirable to produce a diverse solution set that is fairly distributed with respect to these attributes. Motivated by this, we initiate the study of Fair Submodular Cover (FSC), where given a ground set $U$, a monotone submodular function $f:2^Utomathbb{R}_{ge 0}$, a threshold $tau$, the goal is to find a balanced subset of $S$ with minimum cardinality such that $f(S)getau$. We first introduce discrete algorithms…

Samsung Unpacked 2024: How to watch Samsung unveil the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Z Fold and more

Samsung’s summer event is nearly here. Unpacked 2024 will stream live on Wednesday, July 10, at 9AM ET. You can watch it on Samsung’s YouTube channel, Newsroom website and homepage. The company is holding the shindig in Paris ahead of the Olympics, kicking off there later this month. Perhaps it wants to set the tone for a fashion tie-in with its Galaxy Ring launch. Samsung has already shown what it looks like, and the company wrote in a court filing that it plans to start shipping the ring “in or around August.”Foldables are expected to be a marquee attraction, with the…

Revealing the Utilized Rank of Subspaces of Learning in Neural Networks

Revealing the Utilized Rank of Subspaces of Learning in Neural Networks

arXiv:2407.04797v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In this work, we study how well the learned weights of a neural network utilize the space available to them. This notion is related to capacity, but additionally incorporates the interaction of the network architecture with the dataset. Most learned weights appear to be full rank, and are therefore not amenable to low rank decomposition. This deceptively implies that the weights are utilizing the entire space available to them. We propose a simple data-driven transformation that projects the weights onto the subspace where the data and the weight interact. This preserves the functional mapping of…

Associative Recurrent Memory Transformer

Associative Recurrent Memory Transformer

arXiv:2407.04841v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper addresses the challenge of creating a neural architecture for very long sequences that requires constant time for processing new information at each time step. Our approach, Associative Recurrent Memory Transformer (ARMT), is based on transformer self-attention for local context and segment-level recurrence for storage of task specific information distributed over a long context. We demonstrate that ARMT outperfors existing alternatives in associative retrieval tasks and sets a new performance record in the recent BABILong multi-task long-context benchmark by answering single-fact questions over 50 million tokens with an accuracy of 79.9%. The source code…

I’m a Finnish mom in the US. I let my kids schedule their own playdates and allow them to skip homework to get playtime outside.

I'm originally from Finland, and after a decade of ticking off my career goals in the US, I fell for an American man, my neighbor in our Brooklyn apartment building. It seemed like I had just about reached everything I had wished for when my life took a turn. After I became pregnant with our first son, I was shocked to learn how much harder motherhood was in the US and how much more challenging it was to balance work with family compared to the Nordics.Taking time off from work to have kids is encouraged in the Nordics In the…

Starmer tells metro mayors he will set up ‘council for regions’ in move welcomed by Burnham as ‘very positive’ – UK politics live

Starmer tells metro mayors he will set up 'council for regions and nations' so they can meet government regularlyKeir Starmer has confirmed the government will set up a “council for regions and nations” so that ministers can meet regularly with metro mayors. He was speaking at the Downing Street meeting this morning attended by almost all of England’s metro mayors.Starmer told them: I’m a great believer in devolution, I’m a great believer in the idea that those with skin in the game – those that know their communities – make much better decisions than people sitting in Westminster and Whitehall.…
