MoESD: Mixture of Experts Stable Diffusion to Mitigate Gender Bias

arXiv:2407.11002v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Text-to-image models are known to propagate social biases. For example when prompted to generate images of people in certain professions, these models tend to systematically generate specific genders or ethnicity. In this paper, we show that this bias is already present in the text encoder of the model and introduce a Mixture-of-Experts approach by identifying text-encoded bias in the latent space and then creating a bias-identification gate. More specifically, we propose MoESD (Mixture of Experts Stable Diffusion) with BiAs (Bias Adapters) to mitigate gender bias. We also demonstrate that a special token is essential during…

Americans want prices to go down, but deflation could spark a wave of unemployment, top economist Paul Krugman says

Americans hate high prices — but there's a reason people should hope the cost of goods and services don't drop back to pre-pandemic levels, according to Nobel laureate Paul Krugman. But asking for prices to return to their pre-pandemic norm could might not be wise, Krugman said. That's because achieving lower prices would require the US economy to experience a "major episode" of deflation, where consumer prices are outright falling — something that has historically been linked to a sharp rise in unemployment.Such was the case in the US in the early years of the Great Depression, when economic activity ground…

Hydra: Bidirectional State Space Models Through Generalized Matrix Mixers

Hydra: Bidirectional State Space Models Through Generalized Matrix Mixers

arXiv:2407.09941v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A wide array of sequence models are built on a framework modeled after Transformers, comprising alternating sequence mixer and channel mixer layers. This paper studies a unifying matrix mixer view of sequence mixers that can be conceptualized as a linear map on the input sequence. This framework encompasses a broad range of well-known sequence models, including the self-attention of Transformers as well as recent strong alternatives such as structured state space models (SSMs), and allows understanding downstream characteristics such as efficiency and expressivity through properties of their structured matrix class. We identify a key axis…

Robot carers: redefining nursing for the 21st century

Robot carers: redefining nursing for the 21st century

Imagine you’re 90 years old, a grandmother of three and your husband is also elderly and ailing. You need help with almost everything, getting out of a chair, going to the bathroom, getting dressed, eating and remembering your medications. Despite advances in life expectancy, ageing has not been kind, and you feel like a burden to your husband and the healthcare professionals who care for you. Now, imagine being offered a robot that could help with many of these things – from walking to the bathroom to keeping track of your doctor’s appointments. This robot’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) learns…

Evaluating geometric accuracy of NeRF reconstructions compared to SLAM method

Evaluating geometric accuracy of NeRF reconstructions compared to SLAM method

arXiv:2407.11238v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: As Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) implementations become faster, more efficient and accurate, their applicability to real world mapping tasks becomes more accessible. Traditionally, 3D mapping, or scene reconstruction, has relied on expensive LiDAR sensing. Photogrammetry can perform image-based 3D reconstruction but is computationally expensive and requires extremely dense image representation to recover complex geometry and photorealism. NeRFs perform 3D scene reconstruction by training a neural network on sparse image and pose data, achieving superior results to photogrammetry with less input data. This paper presents an evaluation of two NeRF scene reconstructions for the purpose of…

Shannen Doherty said she ‘desperately’ wanted to be a mom. Experts explain how cancer can affect family planning.

Actor Shannen Doherty said she "desperately" wanted to have a child before her death. The "Beverly Hills, 90210" star died on Saturday after a nine-year battle with breast cancer. She was 53 years old.On a January episode of her podcast "Let's Be Clear with Shannen Doherty," she shared with her guest, oncologist Lawrence Piro, that she and her then-husband, Kurt Iswarienko, had turned to IVF to try to conceive. They eventually stopped doing IVF when her chemotherapy induced menopause, she said on the podcast. But Doherty was hopeful that her menstruation would return because she "still wanted to have a baby," Piro…

Generative AI Systems: A Systems-based Perspective on Generative AI

Generative AI Systems: A Systems-based Perspective on Generative AI

arXiv:2407.11001v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have revolutionized AI systems by enabling communication with machines using natural language. Recent developments in Generative AI (GenAI) like Vision-Language Models (GPT-4V) and Gemini have shown great promise in using LLMs as multimodal systems. This new research line results in building Generative AI systems, GenAISys for short, that are capable of multimodal processing and content creation, as well as decision-making. GenAISys use natural language as a communication means and modality encoders as I/O interfaces for processing various data sources. They are also equipped with databases and external specialized tools, communicating with…
