Dyson’s OnTrac headphones ditch the Zone’s air purifier for ‘audio-only’ use

When Dyson revealed its Zone headphones in early 2022, the company had combined its air filtration expertise with noise-cancelling headphones. COVID-19 was still a big part of our lives back then, but the Zone doesn't protect you against the virus. Instead, it's meant to provide less-polluted air as you move about your day, battling things like urban toxins and seasonal allergens. However, extremely short battery life and a $949 price plagued that first model, so it wasn't really a device accessible to the masses. Now the company is back with its first "audio-only" over-ear headphones, the Dyson OnTrac. There's no Bane-like…

The Trump-Vance campaign says they won’t agree to a VP debate date until Kamala Harris picks ‘her running mate’

The Trump-Vance campaign is seemingly operating under the assumption that President Joe Biden will quit the race soon and let his Vice President Kamala Harris run for president. The GOP campaign recently declined to schedule a vice-presidential debate with Harris, saying they don't know who "her running mate" is yet."We don't know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can't lock in a date before their convention," former President Donald Trump's senior campaign advisor Brian Hughes said in a statement on July 17."To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer,…

Improving AlphaFlow for Efficient Protein Ensembles Generation

Improving AlphaFlow for Efficient Protein Ensembles Generation

arXiv:2407.12053v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Investigating conformational landscapes of proteins is a crucial way to understand their biological functions and properties. AlphaFlow stands out as a sequence-conditioned generative model that introduces flexibility into structure prediction models by fine-tuning AlphaFold under the flow-matching framework. Despite the advantages of efficient sampling afforded by flow-matching, AlphaFlow still requires multiple runs of AlphaFold to finally generate one single conformation. Due to the heavy consumption of AlphaFold, its applicability is limited in sampling larger set of protein ensembles or the longer chains within a constrained timeframe. In this work, we propose a feature-conditioned generative model…

Why Making Computer Chips Has Become Such a Big Deal

Why Making Computer Chips Has Become Such a Big Deal

Computer chips are the engine room of the digital economy, and their growing capabilities are enabling technologies such as generative artificial intelligence that promise to transform multiple industries. Their critical role was highlighted when the coronavirus pandemic disrupted chip production in Asia, tipping global technology supply chains into chaos. Small wonder, then, that the devices are now the focus of intense competition between the world’s economic superpowers. Source link lol

Using Multimodal Foundation Models and Clustering for Improved Style Ambiguity Loss

Using Multimodal Foundation Models and Clustering for Improved Style Ambiguity Loss

arXiv:2407.12009v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Teaching text-to-image models to be creative involves using style ambiguity loss, which requires a pretrained classifier. In this work, we explore a new form of the style ambiguity training objective, used to approximate creativity, that does not require training a classifier or even a labeled dataset. We then train a diffusion model to maximize style ambiguity to imbue the diffusion model with creativity and find our new methods improve upon the traditional method, based on automated metrics for human judgment, while still maintaining creativity and novelty. Does ChatGPT Have a Mind?

Does ChatGPT Have a Mind?

[Submitted on 27 Jun 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Does ChatGPT Have a Mind?, by Simon Goldstein and Benjamin A. Levinstein View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:This paper examines the question of whether Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT possess minds, focusing specifically on whether they have a genuine folk psychology encompassing beliefs, desires, and intentions. We approach this question by investigating two key aspects: internal representations and dispositions to act. First, we survey various philosophical theories of representation, including informational, causal, structural, and teleosemantic accounts, arguing that LLMs satisfy key conditions proposed by each. We draw on…

Briefly Bio raises $1.2M to build the GitHub of science experiments

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More Briefly Bio, a startup based in London, has announced a small but meaningful $1.2 million round from Compound VC and others with the goal of making scientific experiments and data more reproducible. In fact, so many thousands of results of scientific experiments haven’t yet — or possibly can’t be reproduced — that some researchers have deemed this a reproducibility or replication crisis. In an effort to help solve this problem, Briefly Bio’s platform uses large language models (LLM) like the kind…

Scarlett Johansson says OpenAI’s Sam Altman would make a good Marvel villain after voice dispute

Scarlett Johansson has spoken out against OpenAI and deepfake technology, saying it was “so disturbing” and she was “so angry” after the company seemingly mimicked her voice for its ChatGPT system Sky.The actor made headlines earlier this year when she issued a public statement saying OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, had contacted her in September 2023 to provide the voice for Sky, in an ode to her role in the Spike Jones film Her, but she had declined for “personal reasons”. In May, as the company released Sky, Altman shared a tweet that simply read “her”.After Johansson’s public statement, and…
