Russia is producing shells 3 times faster than Ukraine’s NATO allies, and for less: report

Russia is producing artillery shells faster and at a lower price than Ukraine's NATO allies, a report found.According to an analysis by consulting firm Bain & Company, reported by Sky News, Russia's armaments industry is expected to make or refurbish 4.5 million artillery shells this year.By comparison, the US, the UK, and other European allies are expected to produce 1.3 million this year. It said that while the 155mm shells typically produced by Western countries for Ukraine cost around $4,000 to make, the 152mm shells Russia uses cost around $1,000.Bain & Co. reportedly used open-source data in producing the analysis.…

Intently raises $3M to launch AI-powered networking tool for startup founders

Join us in returning to NYC on June 5th to collaborate with executive leaders in exploring comprehensive methods for auditing AI models regarding bias, performance, and ethical compliance across diverse organizations. Find out how you can attend here. Intently, an enterprise AI startup, has announced the launch of Founder AI, a new product that uses artificial intelligence to help startup founders identify relevant investors and warm introductions within their existing networks. The tool analyzes a founder’s Gmail account and LinkedIn connections to surface the most promising paths to VCs and angels, automating one of the most time-consuming and opaque parts…

Confluent simplifies integration between Kafka stream processing and Iceberg storage – SiliconANGLE

Confluent Inc. today announced new features in its cloud service that make it easier for users of its Apache Kafka-based streaming engine to store data in the Apache Iceberg table format. The new Confluent Tableflow enables users to convert Kafka topics, associated schemas and metadata to Iceberg tables with one click and better supports feeding analytic workloads in data lakes and data warehouses. That compares with what had previously been a “painful” process, said Addison Huddy, vice president of Kafka at Confluent. “Today, you have to think about how to partition data, consume it and write it out to S3 in…

AI, quantum and nuclear technologies are key to Lockheed Martin’s vision for Space 2050

AI, quantum and nuclear technologies are key to Lockheed Martin’s vision for Space 2050

LOS ANGELES – Artificial intelligence, quantum computing and nuclear power are among the key technologies Lockheed Martin sees as important for future space missions. Through a project called Destination: Space 2050, Lockheed Martin executives are exploring, for example, how AI could assist scientific exploration of locations where communications with remote sensors would be disrupted by high latency. In that type of environment, “you really can’t interact with the robotic sensors,” David Lackner, Lockheed Martin senior manager strategy and business development, said during a June 28 webinar. “You have to have something that is super autonomous that can deal with unknown…

From CNNs to Transformers in Multimodal Human Action Recognition: A Survey

[Submitted on 22 May 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled From CNNs to Transformers in Multimodal Human Action Recognition: A Survey, by Muhammad Bilal Shaikh and 2 other authors View PDF Abstract:Due to its widespread applications, human action recognition is one of the most widely studied research problems in Computer Vision. Recent studies have shown that addressing it using multimodal data leads to superior performance as compared to relying on a single data modality. During the adoption of deep learning for visual modelling in the last decade, action recognition approaches have mainly relied on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs).…

Diamond Valley? Silicon semiconductors face a run for their money

Diamond Valley? Silicon semiconductors face a run for their money

Grenoble-based Diamfab has raised €8.7M in funding for a pilot programme demonstrating semiconductors made using their wafer-thin diamond instead of silicon. Diamfab plans for these semiconductors to form the foundation of chips used in the automotive, renewable energies and quantum industries. The use of diamond to replace silicon in semiconductors has been promised and reneged on for decades, dogged by issues of cost and feasibility. Diamond is lighter, more resistant to high temperatures and more energy-efficient, making it ideal for a wide range of applications including power electronics in electric cars, industry and electricity distribution networks. Breakthroughs in chemical vapour…
