Connective Viewpoints of Signal-to-Noise Diffusion Models

Connective Viewpoints of Signal-to-Noise Diffusion Models

arXiv:2408.04221v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Diffusion models (DM) have become fundamental components of generative models, excelling across various domains such as image creation, audio generation, and complex data interpolation. Signal-to-Noise diffusion models constitute a diverse family covering most state-of-the-art diffusion models. While there have been several attempts to study Signal-to-Noise (S2N) diffusion models from various perspectives, there remains a need for a comprehensive study connecting different viewpoints and exploring new perspectives. In this study, we offer a comprehensive perspective on noise schedulers, examining their role through the lens of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and its connections to information theory. Building…

Researchers discover potentially catastrophic exploit present in AMD chips for decades

Researchers discover potentially catastrophic exploit present in AMD chips for decades

Security researchers have found a vulnerability in AMD processors that has persisted for decades, . This is a fascinating security flaw because it was found in the firmware of the actual chips and potentially allows malware to deeply infect a computer’s memory. The flaw was discovered by , who are calling the AMD-based vulnerability a “Sinkclose" flaw. This potentially allows hackers to run their own code in the most privileged mode of an AMD processor, System Management Mode. This is typically a protected portion of the firmware. The researchers have also noted that the flaw dates back to at least 2006…

Evaluating Language Model Math Reasoning via Grounding in Educational Curricula

Evaluating Language Model Math Reasoning via Grounding in Educational Curricula

arXiv:2408.04226v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Our work presents a novel angle for evaluating language models' (LMs) mathematical abilities, by investigating whether they can discern skills and concepts enabled by math content. We contribute two datasets: one consisting of 385 fine-grained descriptions of K-12 math skills and concepts, or standards, from Achieve the Core (ATC), and another of 9.9K problems labeled with these standards (MathFish). Working with experienced teachers, we find that LMs struggle to tag and verify standards linked to problems, and instead predict labels that are close to ground truth, but differ in subtle ways. We also show that…

Navigating the AI World: Lessons from My Internship at Mihira AI

Navigating the AI World: Lessons from My Internship at Mihira AI

Diving into AI isn’t just about crunching numbers or running algorithms—it’s about understanding complex systems, embracing challenges, and learning from every experience. During my internship at Mihira AI, I had the opportunity to do all of that, and more. In this post, I’ll share how my work on AI models shaped my skills, the importance of a supportive team, and why consistency is key in tech. Learning AI the Practical Way My workday typically wrapped up by 5 or 6 PM, but those hours were packed with learning. Whether I was fine-tuning models or solving complex problems, each task taught…

More People Are Returning That Horrid “AI Pin” Than Are Buying It

Ouch.Humane WasteBy all accounts, the launch of tech startup Humane's AI Pin was an absolute disaster. The $699 gadget, designed to capitalize on AI hype by acting as a personal assistant you can magnetically attach to your lapel, turned out to be a complete flop. Tech YouTuber Marques "MKBHD" Brownlee called it the "worst product" he had ever reviewed. Other reviewers found that it simply wasn't able to do much of anything, with Humane vastly exaggerating the tiny device's capabilities. Oh, and did we mention that its battery life was laughable? In case you're wondering, things are still looking terrible for the venture.…

Amazon-Anthropic Merger Investigated by UK Government

The U.K. government has launched a preliminary investigation into the partnership between Amazon and Anthropic to see if it will significantly lessen competition. This comes days after a similar probe was announced into Alphabet’s collaboration with the AI startup. In March, Amazon concluded its $4 billion (£3.16 billion) investment in Anthropic, the company behind the Claude LLM family, some of the only viable competitors to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It was founded by former OpenAI employees, including siblings Daniela and Dario Amodei, who were both execs. In return for the investment, Anthropic committed to using Amazon Web Services as…
