GazeXplain: Learning to Predict Natural Language Explanations of Visual Scanpaths

arXiv:2408.02788v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: While exploring visual scenes, humans' scanpaths are driven by their underlying attention processes. Understanding visual scanpaths is essential for various applications. Traditional scanpath models predict the where and when of gaze shifts without providing explanations, creating a gap in understanding the rationale behind fixations. To bridge this gap, we introduce GazeXplain, a novel study of visual scanpath prediction and explanation. This involves annotating natural-language explanations for fixations across eye-tracking datasets and proposing a general model with an attention-language decoder that jointly predicts scanpaths and generates explanations. It integrates a unique semantic alignment mechanism to enhance…

Dirty talk: how AI is being used in the bedroom – and beyond

Name: AI dirty talk.Age: Since 2022.Appearance: Either romantic or grim, depending on who you are.Hello, team grim here. Well, get with the programme, because this is the future. A huge amount of AI chatbot use is sexual in nature.Am I going to regret reading this? Not at all. The Washington Post analysed 200,000 conversations from the research dataset WildChat and found that more than 7% of it was about sex stuff. What sort of sex stuff? Apparently, a lot of it involves “asking for racy role play”. There is even an AI companion app called Replika, which is fairly open-minded about…

EC-Guide: A Comprehensive E-Commerce Guide for Instruction Tuning and Quantization

EC-Guide: A Comprehensive E-Commerce Guide for Instruction Tuning and Quantization

arXiv:2408.02970v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have attracted considerable attention in various fields for their cost-effective solutions to diverse challenges, especially with advancements in instruction tuning and quantization. E-commerce, with its complex tasks and extensive product-user interactions, presents a promising application area for LLMs. However, the domain-specific concepts and knowledge inherent in e-commerce pose significant challenges for adapting general LLMs. To address this issue, we developed EC-Guide href{https://github.com/fzp0424/EC-Guide-KDDUP-2024}, a comprehensive e-commerce guide for instruction tuning and quantization of LLMs. We also heuristically integrated Chain-of-Thought (CoT) during inference to enhance arithmetic performance. Our approach achieved the 2nd place…

Apple’s 9th-gen iPad is on sale for $229 right now

We don't always need the latest and most powerful version of a device, especially when it'll cost more money than an older one that does the trick. If you've been waiting for a good deal on an iPad that can handle the basics, it's worth considering the 9th-generation iPad. A variant with 64GB of storage will , which is $100 off the regular price. The discount applies to both the silver and space gray colorways. This model is from 2021 and actually discontinued it in May, so this is effectively a fire sale as the company looks to clear out stock…

UK backs smaller AI projects while scrapping major investments

UK backs smaller AI projects while scrapping major investments

The UK government has announced a £32 million investment in almost 100 cutting-edge AI projects across the country. However, this comes against the backdrop of a controversial decision by the new Labour government to scrap £1.3 billion in funding originally promised by the Conservatives for tech and AI initiatives. Announced today, the £32 million will bolster 98 projects spanning a diverse range of sectors, utilising AI to boost everything from construction site safety to the efficiency of prescription deliveries. More than 200 businesses and research organisations, from Southampton to Birmingham and Northern Ireland, are set to benefit. Rick McConnell, CEO…

When my sister died, I focused on improving my work life. It helped me stay present and deal with my grief.

I'm standing in the corner of the only unoccupied room in Sunnybrook Hospital's emergency center in Toronto, making a phone call. I'm about to say the hardest sentences of my life.My dad picks up the line. I pause. I don't want my voice to crack, but it does, anyway. "Well, Dad, I have some hard news..."Our call ends, and the weight of the day crashes down on me. I'm physically sick, but I make it to the bathroom before causing another issue for the busy medical staff to deal with.I was calling to break the news to my parents that…

A probabilistic framework for learning non-intrusive corrections to long-time climate simulations from short-time training data

[Submitted on 2 Aug 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled A probabilistic framework for learning non-intrusive corrections to long-time climate simulations from short-time training data, by Benedikt Barthel Sorensen and 6 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:Chaotic systems, such as turbulent flows, are ubiquitous in science and engineering. However, their study remains a challenge due to the large range scales, and the strong interaction with other, often not fully understood, physics. As a consequence, the spatiotemporal resolution required for accurate simulation of these systems is typically computationally infeasible, particularly for applications of long-term risk assessment, such as…
