Parallel Domain, a pioneer in synthetic data generation and simulation for autonomous systems, today unveiled PD Replica, a groundbreaking product that generates high-fidelity digital twins from real-world photos, videos, and 3D scans, transforming the way autonomous vehicles are developed and tested.
PD Replica empowers customers to create near-perfect virtual replicas of real-world environments, from city streets to highways, by leveraging AI and advanced 3D reconstruction techniques. The product transforms everyday data captured by cameras, smartphones, and drones into immersive, semantically-rich 3D worlds, enabling autonomous vehicle developers to test their AI systems in high-fidelity simulations that mirror real-world conditions with unprecedented accuracy.
“With PD Replica, the big leap forward is we’ve never had a way — and really, nobody’s had a way — to create these pixel-accurate copies of actual locations,” said Kevin McNamara, founder and CEO of Parallel Domain, in an exclusive interview with VentureBeat. “It’s the closest thing you can get to testing in the real world without testing in the real world.”
The implications of PD Replica are far-reaching. Autonomous vehicle developers (many of whom are already working with Parallel Domain) can now test their systems in high-fidelity simulations without the risks and logistical challenges of physical testing. This technology opens up new possibilities for the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles — and in the near future could serve other industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, supply chain, logistics, agriculture, and more.

Recent advances in AI and 3D reconstruction power high-fidelity digital twins
PD Replica’s AI pipeline intelligently processes camera data, including smartphone photos and videos, to create pixel-perfect, fully-labeled 3D replicas of the real world. The ability to create such high-fidelity replicas is powered by recent advancements in AI and 3D reconstruction techniques. Once the digital twin is created, PD Replica can simulate various sensor modalities, such as LIDAR point clouds, thermal camera imagery, and drone perspectives, enabling comprehensive testing of autonomous systems.
“Foundational research in neural radiance fields, Gaussian splatting, and visual SLAM has taken a leap forward over the past few years,” explained McNamara. “Our machine learning team has developed proprietary technology to chain some of this research together and extract the metadata needed for high-fidelity simulation.”
PD Replica complements Parallel Domain’s existing synthetic data generation platform, which procedurally generates 3D environments that statistically match the distribution of real-world locations. However, digital twins represent the next level of simulation fidelity.
From digital cousins to identical twins: a leap in simulation fidelity
“Previously, simulation environments were more like digital ‘cousins’ — they resembled target locations but weren’t exact copies,” said Michael DiBenigno, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Parallel Domain. “PD Replica changes that. We can now provide customers with a pixel-perfect copy of a real location, down to the paint chipping off a bench. It’s the closest thing to real-world testing, without actually being in the real world.”
This shift from statistical approximation to high-fidelity digital twins unlocks new use cases, particularly around validation and regression testing of perception models. Customers can now test extensively on the exact locations where they intend to deploy.
Beyond the leap in simulation fidelity, PD Replica also provides tools to customize environments and test scenarios. Real-world trajectories from sensor logs can be replayed with different object models to test edge cases. Generative AI enables users to populate scenes with novel objects just by writing a text prompt.
Nightly regression testing to validate perception models and catch unintended consequences
“Regression testing in simulated environments is where our customers are seeing the most value,” McNamara told VentureBeat. “Every time they improve one part of a perception model, there could be unintended consequences that reduce performance elsewhere. With nightly simulation testing, they can proactively catch those issues.”
This ability to test a high volume of scenarios on-demand, in an environment that matches the real world, could significantly accelerate the development of safe and reliable autonomous vehicles and robots. Parallel Domain believes PD Replica represents a major step towards their mission of deploying autonomous systems at scale.
The company has already gained significant traction, with an impressive roster of customers including Google, Toyota Research Institute, Woven Planet, and Continental, among others. The automotive sector has been a particularly strong vertical for Parallel Domain, as leading automakers and autonomous vehicle companies seek to accelerate their development timelines and enhance the safety of their systems through simulation.
PD Replica’s launch positions Parallel Domain to further penetrate this market and expand into adjacent sectors such as delivery robotics and drones. The need for high-fidelity simulation spans the entire autonomy industry, and Parallel Domain’s platform is uniquely suited to meet this demand.
As the autonomous vehicle industry matures, the importance of extensive testing and validation has come into sharp focus. High-profile accidents and disengagements have underscored the need for more rigorous testing before deploying autonomous systems on public roads. By providing a safe, controlled environment that faithfully replicates real-world conditions, PD Replica could play a crucial role in enabling this necessary testing at scale.
Moreover, the regulatory landscape for autonomous vehicles is still evolving, with governments and industry bodies working to establish standards and best practices for testing and deployment. High-fidelity simulation is likely to be a key component of these frameworks, as it allows for extensive testing and validation without putting real-world road users at risk.
With the launch of PD Replica, Parallel Domain is cementing its position as a leader in the simulation and synthetic data space. As the race to autonomy accelerates, the company’s platform is poised to be a critical enabler, helping customers across industries bring safer, more reliable autonomous systems to market faster.
