Oracle Touts Performance Boost with Exadata X11M

Oracle today unveiled the Exadata X11M, the latest in its line of high-performance appliances for AI, analytics, and OLTP workloads. The company says the X11M will give customers substantial speedups across the board at the same starting price as the Exadata appliance it replaces.

Based on the latest generation AMD EPYC processors and Oracle Database 23ai, the Exadata X11M is designed to handle some of the toughest AI and analytics loads that customers can throw at it, from vector AI to large table scans for analytics.

Thanks to speedups in the processors, faster flash drives, and better software, the X11M delivers big performance gains for customers, Oracle says, including 55% faster AI vector searches, 2.2X faster analytics scan throughput, and 25% faster transaction processing.

Digging into the tech specs reveals the source of some of the performance gains, including a 25% per-core performance boost with the latest 96-core EPYC processors used in the Exadata X11M database servers and a 33% boost in memory bandwidth.

The Exadata X11M High Capacity (HC) Storage Server and Extreme Flash (EF) Storage Server appliances, meanwhile, get an 11% bump in processing oomph thanks to using the latest 32-core AMD CPUs, as well as a 2.2x increase in flash throughput, thanks to Oracle moving the 6.8 TB cards used for the Exadata Smart Flash Cache to PCIe5.

Oracle also launched the Database Server X11M-Z as a new option for on-prem Exadata deployments. This appliance uses a single 32-core AMD EPYC processor and either 768 GB or 1.25 TB of RAM (the regular Database Server X11M can be equipped with up to 3TB of RAM). Big Red also launched the High Capacity X11M-Z Storage Server (HC-Z), which gives customers more option for large deployments.

The Exadata X11M can be deployed on-prem or in any major cloud, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. That’s a major benefit to customers, according to Kothanda Umamageswaran, senior vice president of Exadata and scale-out technologies at Oracle.

“With Oracle Exadata X11M, we continue to provide customers with extreme scale, performance, business value, and the choice and flexibility to deploy wherever they need,” Umamageswaran stated in a press release. “Whether upgrading an existing system or deploying new applications on Exadata X11M, customers benefit from new levels of price performance, consolidation, and efficiency with resulting savings in hardware, power and cooling, and data center space.”
