Following a week that saw Raspberry Pi float on the London Stock Exchange and reach a billion-dollar valuation at the time of writing, the U.K. semiconductor industry feels buoyant, with lots of excitement about this new U.K. success story. The timing of the ChipStart U.K. event in London, run by Silicon Catalyst, could not have been better as the silicon-focused incubator showcased the startup companies from its first cohort in the program—which have raised some GBP £7 million (about $8.8 million) so far in eight months, and brought onto stage the companies selected for the second cohort of startups.
In this series of interviews, I talked to Sean Redmond, managing partner of Silicon Catalyst U.K., Jamie Urquhart, a mentor in the ChipStart U.K program and one of the founders of Arm, and independent analyst David Harold, about the program. Specifically, we discussed the innovative technologies that are being developed by the startups in both the first and the second cohort to tackle the barriers in performance, scaling and energy efficiency in the semiconductor industry.
We talked about the innovations in computer architectures, tackling the memory wall, integrated silicon photonics, nanomaterials and more. We also has a chat about the new Silicon Catalyst fund launched in the U.S., as well as the launch of Silicon Catalyst U.K. Angels.
