Big Data Career Notes for October 2024

It’s that time of month again–time for Big Data Career Notes, a monthly feature where we keep you up-to-date on the latest career developments for individuals in the big data community. Whether it’s a promotion, new company hire, or even an accolade, we’ve got the details. Check in each month for an updated list and you may even come across someone you know, or better yet, yourself!

Amit Zavery

Amit Zavery, who was Google Cloud’s general manager and vice president and head of platform for the past five years, is headed to Santa Clara, California-based cloud service provider ServiceNow, where he was hired to the positions of president, chief operating officer, and chief product officer.

Zavery followed Thomas Kurian to Google Cloud in 2019 after a 24-year career at Oracle, where his last position was executive vice president of product development. Kurian, who is the CEO of Google Cloud, was president of the Redwood Shores, California software giant when he and Zavery made the move down Hwy. 101 to the Googleplex.

“It’s an incredible honor to take on this role at such a pivotal time for the company,” Zavery said in a LinkedIn post. “ServiceNow is leading the charge in transforming the way enterprises work through innovation, and I couldn’t be more excited to contribute to that mission.

Abhi Maheshwari

Aisera, a developer of agentic AI solutions, has hired Abhi Maheshwari to be the company’s new CEO. Maheshwari previously was the CFO and was serving as the interim CEO of the Palo Alto, California company, but was not officially appointed. The company confirmed his appointment to the top job earlier this month.

Prior to joining Aisera, Maheshwari was the chief accounting officer (CAO) at Crowdstrike, where he played an important role in the company’s revenue growth and 2019 IPO. Maheshwari also served as CAO at Logitech, where he led the finance business unit, mergers and acquisition, treasury, and tax operations.

Aisera made several other personnel moves, including: appointing Amit Pandey to its board of directors as executive chair; hiring Dejan Deklich as Chief Development Officer; and hiring Ben Lu as CFO.

Prat Moghe

Promethium, the developer of an AI-native data fabric whose mission is to democratie data and AI one question at a time, this month announced the appointment of Prat Moghe as its new chief executive officer. Moghe has 25 years of experience in data and analytics as a founder, entrepreneur, and executive, including roles at Cloudera, Cazena, and IBM Netezza.

Moghe succeeds Kaycee Lai, Promethium’s founder, in the CEO’s office. In addition to Moghe, the company announced the hiring of Durgesh Mankekar as VP of engineering; Lovan Chetty as VP of product and customer success; and Sam Berg as VP of sales and business development.

“I feel privileged to team up with our founder Kaycee Lai,” Moghe wrote in a blog post. “His vision has been prescient and under his leadership our team–which we proudly refer to as Prometheans–has developed a unique offering with transformational potential.”

Shawn Toldo

Shawn Toldo has been hired as the vice president of worldwide partner ecosystem at dbt Labs, the creators of the dbt data transformation tool. Previously, Toldo held executive positions at Microsoft, VMware, Appian, and OneTrust.

“Over the past two years, dbt Labs’ partner ecosystem has solidified itself as a crucial part of delivering value to dbt users,” Toldo said in a press release. “I’m impressed by the program’s rapid growth and am energized by the opportunity to lead it into its next phase.”

In addition to Toldo, dbt Labs announced that it has hired Raymond Wong to be its new senior director of worldwide partner programs, strategy, and operations. Wong previously led the global partner programs and investments at Snowflake.

Vasu Murthy

Cohesity announced it has hired Vasu Murthy to be its new senior vice president and chief product officer. Murthy is an enterprise software industry veteran with more than 25 years of experience.

Murthy joined Cohesity from Rubrik, where he was vice president of products and was responsible for the company’s core product, platform, and technology partnerships. Prior to Rubrik, Murthy was vice president of products for the analytics platform at Oracle.

“Cohesity has a differentiated vision and platform that has the potential to transform the industry completely,” Murthy said. “As we scale our R&D investments and build best-in-class offerings to support global customers, I look forward to partnering with the team to make a bigger impact. I’m thrilled to join Cohesity in their journey as we enter the next growth phase.”

Event Store, the developer of the EventStoreDB stream database that’s hoping to shake up the event storage business, this month announced the appointment of industry veteran Kirk Dunn to be its new CEO. Dunn has more than 20 years of experience as a founder, investor, and executive in the data business, including stops as the CEO at Bang Networks and Powerfile, investments in Synadia, Cerebra Technologies, and AlgoLift, and a stint as COO of Cloudera from 2011 to 2015.

“Data platforms are where enterprise value is created,” Dunn said. “As someone who’s been working at and investing in data platform companies for the better part of two decades, I was drawn to the opportunity to lead Event Store through its rapid growth phase. We’re addressing a long standing, massive business need and doing it with very differentiated technology.”

Event Store also announced the appointment of David Wang as vice president of engineering. Wang comes to the San Francisco company after the first 27 years of his career, which included stops at HPE, Cisco, Cloudera, Rubrik, and Redpanda, At Cloudera, Wang was one of the first managers to oversee all of the storage teams (HDFS, HBase, Kudu, Kafka, etc).

John Hyten

John E. Hyten, a retired general in the United States Air Force, has joined the board of directors for C3, the enterprise AI platform company. Hyten served for 40 years with distinction in the USAF, including commander of the Air Force Space Command, commander of the United States Strategic Command, and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Hyten joined the company’s advisory board in 2022, and also served as a special advisor to Thomas Siebel, the CEO and chairman of C3. Siebel says he wanted Hyten on the board of directors due to his “deep understanding of the necessity of AI to modernize the defense sector” as well as his experience working with federal agencies, which are among the biggest customer segments for C3. The company currently counts the USAF as one of its customers.

Deron Miller

Starburst, a provider of open data lakehouse solutions, announced this month that it has appointed Deron Miller to be its senior vice president and general manager for the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions.

Prior to Starburst, Miller served as chief revenue officer for Delphix, a Perforce-held provider of data management solutions. Miller also held leadership positions at GE, Adobe, Microstrategy, and Nuance Communications.

“Starburst is one of the most exciting technologies that I have seen in over 20 years,” Miller said.”By enabling our customers to access data directly across different platforms, we can help accelerate innovation, while reducing cost and risk.”
