LLM SECURITY WEAKNESSES
Research by Splunk has highlighted a series of ways that the large language model-based applications that form the basis of gen AI can be exploited by cybercriminals. Many of the threats that need to be addressed are related to the prompts used to query LLMs and the responses gained from them due to the model not acting in the way its designers intended.
There are several reasons why gen AI can operate outside its guardrails. A major contributor is its pace of adoption, which significantly outpaces the implementation pace of cybersecurity policies that could detect and prevent threats. After all, organizations across almost all industries are eager to take advantage of gen AI’s benefits. The technology has garnered 93% adoption across businesses and 91% adoption in security teams. Despite its high utilization rate, however, 34% of organizations report they do not have a gen AI policy in place.
“Companies face the challenge of keeping pace with the industry’s AI adoption rate to avoid falling behind their competitors and opening themselves up to threat actors who leverage it for their gain,” said Mick Baccio, Global Security Strategist at Splunk SURGe. “This leads to many organizations rapidly implementing gen AI without establishing the necessary safety measures.”
