Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff could become a history-making president and first gentleman. Here’s a timeline of their relationship.

August 2024: Harris and Emhoff marked their 10th wedding anniversary at the Democratic National Convention, where she accepted the presidential nomination.

In his speech on the third night of the convention, Emhoff recounted how he met and fell in love with Harris, including the “rambling” first voicemail he left after he got her number.

“I remember I was trying to grab the words out of the air and just put them back in my mouth,” he said. “And for what seemed like far too many minutes, I hung up. By the way, Kamala saved that voicemail and she makes me listen to it on every anniversary.”

He also called Harris a “joyful warrior” who can “smell weakness.”

“Her passion will benefit all of us when she’s our president,” he said. “And here’s the thing about joyful warriors. There are still warriors, and Kamala is as tough as it comes. Just ask the criminals, the global gangsters, and the witnesses before the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

In her speech accepting the nomination the following night, Harris began by wishing Emhoff a happy anniversary.

“Let me start by thanking my most incredible husband Doug for being an incredible partner to me, an incredible father to Cole and Ella, and happy anniversary, Dougie,” she said. “I love you so very much.”
