The hype around artificial intelligence focuses on infrastructure, but real progress is in data-oriented, application-driven retrieval.
Once the infrastructure is established, the next innovation layer will be in data, according to theCUBE Research executive analyst John Furrier.
“Databricks has their event coming up. If you look at the data layer, I see AI in three layers: infrastructure, raw horsepower, chips, compute, servers, machines, all kinds of infrastructure. Then the next layer is data, all kinds of things around data,” Furrier said on a recent episode of theCUBE Podcast. “Then, finally, the application, software, the interface, the users.”
With the data layer completely upside down, what comes next will be of key interest during the Databricks Data + AI Summit from June 11 to 12. The event will be an opportunity to examine how Databricks Inc. is contributing to domain-specific AI trends to meet growing demand for intelligent, enterprise-grade AI applications.
Those subjects and more will be explored by Furrier and theCUBE analysts Savannah Peterson and Rob Strechay as they talk with thought leaders about the roles and responsibilities of data and its management for enterprise-scale LLMs. Join our analysts on June 11-12 for our coverage of the Databricks Data + AI Summit live on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. Databricks has made multiple new acquisitions
In March, Databricks reported $1.6 billion in revenue, representing growth of more than 50% over the previous year. In reporting the figure, the company highlighted its various acquisitions in its most recent fiscal year, including acquiring generative artificial intelligence startup MosaicML Inc. in a deal worth $1.3 billion in June 2023.
Also in March of this year, Databricks open-sourced its own large language model, DBRX, which can be paired with MosaicML. DBRX is the culmination of a decades-long strategy, according to Chris D’Agostino, global field chief technology officer of Databricks.
“In addition to creating an environment where people can build and train their own LLMs and other types of machine learning models, we are embedding machine learning inside of the Databricks platform,” D’Agostino told theCUBE. “As new data comes in, we’ve trained models on existing data, and as the new data arrives we’re able to compare and contrast whether or not that new data is consistent.”
In addition to MosaicML, Databricks has had its eye on other acquisitions in the past number of months. That includes AI dataset management startup Lilac AI Inc.
The company also said in March that it had made an unspecified strategic investment and partnership with large language model developer Mistral AI SAS. Mistral’s open models will be natively integrated with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform while providing access in the Databricks Marketplace, and including them in its Mosaic AI Playground, allowing customers to fine-tune them with their own data, according to the company.
Updates and insights on Databricks’ ecosystem, including recent acquisitions and strategic partnerships, will be another focus of the Databricks Data + AI event. TheCUBE will provide full coverage of the event to capture all the breaking news and provide analyst-driven commentary. You can follow theCUBE’s wall-to-wall coverage for firsthand insights.
