Stephanie Grisham, who worked as former President Donald Trump’s press secretary in his administration, had harsh words for the former president as she took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday in an effort to win over disaffected Republicans and undecided voters.
Grisham served as Trump’s third press secretary in the final stretch of his presidency, as well as first lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff. She resigned on January 6, 2021, and has since been outspoken about her time in the administration.
The former Trump aide is one of several Republican-affiliated speakers giving speeches at the DNC this week in Chicago as the Democratic party tries to woo unhappy GOP voters and Independents away from Trump.
Grisham delivered brief comments on Tuesday, alleging that Trump privately makes fun of his supporters.
“Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters — calls them ‘basement dwellers,'” Grisham said in her speech.
When reached for comment, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, pointed Business Insider to a social media post from Trump advisor Jason Miller is which he said: “Grisham botched that speech.”
Grisham explicitly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, citing her dedication to the country over party.
She also attacked Trump’s character, saying he lacks empathy, morals, and “fidelity to the truth.” She also acknowledged that she never gave a press briefing, saying didn’t want to stand behind the podium and lie.
Grisham released a bombshell memoir in 2021, chronicling her time in the chaotic Trump White House. Since then, she has regularly spoken out against Trump and his 2024 candidacy.
Kyle Sweetser, a Republican who said he voted for Trump and regularly donated to his campaigns, also spoke on Tuesday, saying his opinion changed when he saw the former president’s tariff policy in action.
“I realized Trump wasn’t for me. He was for lining his own pockets,” said Sweetser. “Now I’m not left wing, period. But I believe our leaders should bring out the best in us, not the worst. That’s why I’m voting for Kamala Harris.”
Former President Barack Obama is set to deliver a keynote speech later on Tuesday.
