Scalable Detection of Salient Entities in News Articles

Scalable Detection of Salient Entities in News Articles

arXiv:2405.20461v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: News articles typically mention numerous entities, a large fraction of which are tangential to the story. Detecting the salience of entities in articles is thus important to applications such as news search, analysis and summarization. In this work, we explore new approaches for efficient and effective salient entity detection by fine-tuning pretrained transformer models with classification heads that use entity tags or contextualized entity representations directly. Experiments show that these straightforward techniques dramatically outperform prior work across datasets with varying sizes and salience definitions. We also study knowledge distillation techniques to effectively reduce the computational…

The Big-Tech Clean Energy Crunch Is Here

The Big-Tech Clean Energy Crunch Is Here

Big Tech’s appetite for energy is just about visible from the east coast of Scotland. Some 12 miles out to sea sits a wind farm, where each of the 60 giant turbines has blades roughly the length of an American football field. The utility companies behind the Moray West project had promised the site would be capable of generating enough electricity to power 1.3 million homes once completed. That was before Amazon stepped in.In January, Amazon announced it had struck a deal to claim more than half the site’s 880 megawatts of output, part of its ongoing attempt to slake…

The best gifts for new dads

The best gifts for new dads

It’s hard to be a new parent, we know. Keeping yourself going is infinitely harder when you’re trying to nurture and care for a brand new human at the same time. Thankfully, there’s a lot of tech out there that helps ease the burden for moms and dads, from wireless earbuds and tablets, to a simple rattle that can help diffuse a potential meltdown. Tech won’t help with the mountains of dirty diapers or the sleepless nights, but it can at least help new parents stay sane.Photo by Nathan Ingraham / EngadgetTablets are a multi-functional lifesaver for any new dad…

Aporia introduces real-time guardrails for multimodal AI applications – SiliconANGLE

Machine learning observability startup Aporia Technologies Ltd. today launched Guardrails for Multimodal AI Applications, a new service that extends its existing artificial intelligence guardrails solution to include guardrails for vision and audio. Claimed to be a first-of-its-kind solution, Guardrails for Multimodal AI Applications is designed to mitigate issues in video and audio-based AI applications, such as hallucinations, wrong responses, compliance violations and jailbreak attempts. Multimodal AI is an AI system that can simultaneously process and interpret multiple types of data inputs, such as text, images, audio and video. The new service’s release follows OpenAI’s launch of its flagship multimodal GPT-4o model on…

As Plastic Piles Up, So Does Funding To Startups Working On Alternatives

As Plastic Piles Up, So Does Funding To Startups Working On Alternatives

People are using and discarding too much plastic. It’s terrible for the environment, contributes to global warming and can contain substances dangerous for our own health. This isn’t new information. Consumers are already pretty aware about the awfulness of plastic and guilty about how much we consume. We spend billions on things like paper straws and fancy reusable water bottles. And yet, plastic remains omnipresent, from berry cartons to bottle caps to shopping bags. In tandem, global plastic waste is on track to almost triple by 2060 from 2019 levels. Plastic overconsumption isn’t a problem startups are likely to solve…

Documentation enhancements for Deephaven v0.20.0 | Deephaven

Deephaven brings together your data in tables that change, updating in real time along with your data. The latest release, Deephaven v0.20.0, offers more table types to choose from, facilitating impressive visualizations from which to easily extract insights. We discuss the significant updates to Deephaven's user guide below. Use our how-to guides to jumpstart your data journey. This release includes three new table types:Tree tables - a hierarchial table that provides a convenient way to display your data by allowing you to expand or collapse "branches" of the table as needed. When fully collapsed, the "tree" component resembles a navigation menu:…

Explainable Data-driven Modeling of Adsorption Energy in Heterogeneous Catalysis

Explainable Data-driven Modeling of Adsorption Energy in Heterogeneous Catalysis

[Submitted on 30 May 2024] View a PDF of the paper titled Explainable Data-driven Modeling of Adsorption Energy in Heterogeneous Catalysis, by Tirtha Vinchurkar and 2 other authors View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:The increasing popularity of machine learning (ML) in catalysis has spurred interest in leveraging these techniques to enhance catalyst design. Our study aims to bridge the gap between physics-based studies and data-driven methodologies by integrating ML techniques with eXplainable AI (XAI). Specifically, we employ two XAI techniques: Post-hoc XAI analysis and Symbolic Regression. These techniques help us unravel the correlation between adsorption energy and the properties of the…

Microsoft Weaving AI Into Windows Ecosystem, Risks Scrutiny – EE Times

Microsoft Weaving AI Into Windows Ecosystem, Risks Scrutiny – EE Times

//php echo do_shortcode('[responsivevoice_button voice="US English Male" buttontext="Listen to Post"]') ?> There has been a flood of announcements in just the past week around AI PCs from Microsoft and its partners. Microsoft led with the launch of its new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro, with similar PCs launching from the leading PC OEMs. Microsoft also introduced new tools for using, integrating and even building custom Copilot AI agents. Open AI—a key Microsoft partner in the development of Copilot—launched GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”), which provides multimodal interaction, particularly natural voice communications. The news all looks positive for the advancement of AI, and…

Intelligent data infrastructure: NetApp transforms data management – SiliconANGLE

Intelligent data infrastructure: NetApp transforms data management – SiliconANGLE

With artificial intelligence and data-driven decision-making taking center stage in the enterprise world, the need for an intelligent data infrastructure has become more pronounced to meet these growing demands.  As a result, NetApp Inc. is making the intelligent data infrastructure a reality through its Unified Data Storage, which incorporates AI principles and offers a single operating environment. This enables the management of any data type regardless of whether its structured or unstructured, according to Gabie Boko (pictured), chief marketing officer of NetApp. “We’re redefining unified to be more than just a protocol, but to be how you are integrated,” she…

Multi-Label Guided Soft Contrastive Learning for Efficient Earth Observation Pretraining

Multi-Label Guided Soft Contrastive Learning for Efficient Earth Observation Pretraining

arXiv:2405.20462v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Self-supervised pretraining on large-scale satellite data has raised great interest in building Earth observation (EO) foundation models. However, many important resources beyond pure satellite imagery, such as land-cover-land-use products that provide free global semantic information, as well as vision foundation models that hold strong knowledge of the natural world, tend to be overlooked. In this work, we show these free additional resources not only help resolve common contrastive learning bottlenecks, but also significantly boost the efficiency and effectiveness of EO pretraining. Specifically, we first propose soft contrastive learning that optimizes cross-scene soft similarity based on…
