Apple will reportedly build a dedicated Passwords app for the iPhone and Mac

Apple plans to build a password management app right into the next versions of iPhone and Mac operating systems, reported Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on Thursday. The new app, simply called Passwords, will compete against existing password managers like 1Password and LastPass, which typically charge people a monthly fee for generating and storing unique passwords. Apple plans to reveal the app at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10.Apple already generates and stores unique passwords through iCloud Keychain, a feature that syncs passwords across all Apple devices you own as well as Windows PCs through a browser extension. But…

Distilling Aggregated Knowledge for Weakly-Supervised Video Anomaly Detection

Distilling Aggregated Knowledge for Weakly-Supervised Video Anomaly Detection

arXiv:2406.02831v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Video anomaly detection aims to develop automated models capable of identifying abnormal events in surveillance videos. The benchmark setup for this task is extremely challenging due to: i) the limited size of the training sets, ii) weak supervision provided in terms of video-level labels, and iii) intrinsic class imbalance induced by the scarcity of abnormal events. In this work, we show that distilling knowledge from aggregated representations of multiple backbones into a relatively simple model achieves state-of-the-art performance. In particular, we develop a bi-level distillation approach along with a novel disentangled cross-attention-based feature aggregation network.…

Release Notes for Deephaven version 0.15 | Deephaven

Summer has continued to deliver features for data scientists, developers, and analysts to the deephaven-core project. Last month’s easy Python pip installation is followed by the first integration of Deephaven’s real-time widgets with Jupyter, the official release of the requested Go client, and many quality-of-life improvements. The complete 0.15.0 release notes can be found on GitHub.Real-time and interactive widgets in JupyterDeephaven’s interactive table widget is powerful. We've written about it handling a quadrillion rows and serving as a best-of-breed pandas DataFrame viewer. Now, you can use that same Table widget in a Jupyter Notebook. And it displays real-time and updating data! That's a first,…

Too Big to Fail: Larger Language Models are Disproportionately Resilient to Induction of Dementia-Related Linguistic Anomalies

Too Big to Fail: Larger Language Models are Disproportionately Resilient to Induction of Dementia-Related Linguistic Anomalies

arXiv:2406.02830v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: As artificial neural networks grow in complexity, understanding their inner workings becomes increasingly challenging, which is particularly important in healthcare applications. The intrinsic evaluation metrics of autoregressive neural language models (NLMs), perplexity (PPL), can reflect how "surprised" an NLM model is at novel input. PPL has been widely used to understand the behavior of NLMs. Previous findings show that changes in PPL when masking attention layers in pre-trained transformer-based NLMs reflect linguistic anomalies associated with Alzheimer's disease dementia. Building upon this, we explore a novel bidirectional attention head ablation method that exhibits properties attributed to…

What the Big Fuss Over Table Formats and Metadata Catalogs Is All About

What the Big Fuss Over Table Formats and Metadata Catalogs Is All About

(Pinare/Shutterstock) The big data community gained clarity on the future of data lakehouses earlier this week as a result of Snowflake’s open sourcing of its new Polaris metadata catalog and Databricks’ acquisition of Tabular. The actions cemented Apache Iceberg as the winner of the battle of open table formats, which is a big win for customers and open data, while it exposes a new competitive front: the metadata catalog. The news Monday and Tuesday was as hot as the weather in San Francisco this week, and left some longtime big data watchers gasping for breath. To recap: On Monday, Snowflake…

Discovering when an agent is present in a system

Discovering when an agent is present in a system

Research Published 18 August 2022 Authors Zachary Kenton, Ramana Kumar, Sebastian Farquhar, Jonathan Richens, Matt MacDermott, Tom Everitt New, formal definition of agency gives clear principles for causal modelling of AI agents and the incentives they faceWe want to build safe, aligned artificial general intelligence (AGI) systems that pursue the intended goals of its designers. Causal influence diagrams (CIDs) are a way to model decision-making situations that allow us to reason about agent incentives. For example, here is a CID for a 1-step Markov decision process – a typical framework for decision-making problems. S1 represents the initial state, A1 represents…

Oracle engineer helps lead US to historic cricket win against Pakistan

The US bested Pakistan in a nail-biting match at the T20 Cricket World Cup on Thursday, thanks in part to the athleticism of a lead engineer at Oracle.Saurabh Netravalkar spends his work days as a principal member of Oracle's technical team, flexing his professional skills at the software company, according to his LinkedIn profile. But on Thursday, he used his cricket skills to help lead the men's US team to a historic victory and stunning upset at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Texas. In addition to being a top-notch techie, Netravalkar is also a left-arm fast bowler on Team…
