On the Edge by Nate Silver review – the art of risk-taking

Nothing is more interesting to poker players and less interesting to everyone else than a breathless recounting of who bet how much with a jack and six of clubs in some game years ago. There’s an awful lot of that kind of thing in this book, which celebrates poker players as paradigmatic citizens of a global intellectual community it calls “the River”, which also counts among its inhabitants venture capitalists, crypto traders, fashionable philosophers and mild-mannered statisticians. One such statistician, Nate Silver himself, came to public prominence as a data-driven analyst of political polls at his website FiveThirtyEight, which predicted the results of…

Lasso Security sets new standard in LLM safety with Context-Based Access Controls

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More To scale up large language models (LLMs) in support of long-term AI strategies, enterprises are relying on retrieval augmented generation (RAG) frameworks that need stronger contextual security to meet the skyrocketing demands for integration. Protecting RAGs requires contextual intelligence However, traditional RAG access control techniques aren’t designed to deliver contextual control. RAG’s lack of native access control poses a significant security risk to enterprises, as it could allow unauthorized users to access sensitive information.   Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) lacks the…

Privacy-Safe Iris Presentation Attack Detection

Privacy-Safe Iris Presentation Attack Detection

arXiv:2408.02750v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper proposes a framework for a privacy-safe iris presentation attack detection (PAD) method, designed solely with synthetically-generated, identity-leakage-free iris images. Once trained, the method is evaluated in a classical way using state-of-the-art iris PAD benchmarks. We designed two generative models for the synthesis of ISO/IEC 19794-6-compliant iris images. The first model synthesizes bona fide-looking samples. To avoid ``identity leakage,'' the generated samples that accidentally matched those used in the model's training were excluded. The second model synthesizes images of irises with textured contact lenses and is conditioned by a given contact lens brand to…
