Texas judge blocks the FTC from enforcing its ban on noncompete agreements

The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) efforts to ban noncompete agreements has been blocked by a federal judge in Texas. According to The Washington Post, US District Judge Ada Brown has determined that the agency doesn't have the authority to enforce the rule, which was supposed to take effect on September 4. She reportedly wrote in her decision that the FTC only looked at "inconsistent and flawed empirical evidence" and didn't consider evidence in support of noncompetes. "The role of an administrative agency is to do as told by Congress, not to do what the agency thinks it should do," she…

NoMatterXAI: Generating “No Matter What” Alterfactual Examples for Explaining Black-Box Text Classification Models

arXiv:2408.10528v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In Explainable AI (XAI), counterfactual explanations (CEs) are a well-studied method to communicate feature relevance through contrastive reasoning of "what if" to explain AI models' predictions. However, they only focus on important (i.e., relevant) features and largely disregard less important (i.e., irrelevant) ones. Such irrelevant features can be crucial in many applications, especially when users need to ensure that an AI model's decisions are not affected or biased against specific attributes such as gender, race, religion, or political affiliation. To address this gap, the concept of alterfactual explanations (AEs) has been proposed. AEs explore an…

Can AI detect anomalies in orbital astrodynamics? Managing a complex challenge

Can AI detect anomalies in orbital astrodynamics? Managing a complex challenge

As space traffic increases and our reliance on satellites grows, the question of how to manage and predict anomalies in orbital astrodynamics becomes ever more critical. The idea that artificial intelligence (AI) might provide a solution is enticing. However, the reality is that AI alone may not be sufficient to tackle the complexities and uncertainties inherent in space environments. Thirty years ago, computational and communication limitations made it nearly impossible to manage and process the kinds of datasets we handle today. The explosion of data availability, combined with advanced search algorithms and AI techniques, has revolutionized our ability to draw…

Ford just put its EV plans in reverse

Ford has changed its electric vehicle strategy again, canceling long-held plans for electric three-row SUVs and delaying production of its next electric pickup truck. In a strategy shift that Ford says will initially cost the company nearly $2 billion, the American automaker is replacing the canceled electric SUVs with hybrid models, CFO John Lawler told reporters on a Tuesday morning phone call. After assessing current pricing pressure on EVs, the cost of a battery large enough to power three-row SUVs, and taking into account consumer demand, Lawler said that Ford wouldn't be able to meet its goal of achieving profitability for the…

China leans into using AI − even as the US leads in developing it

In the competitive arena of global technology, China’s ambitions in artificial intelligence stand out – not just for their scale but for their distinct strategic approach. In 2017, the Chinese Communist Party declared its intent to surpass the United States to become the world leader in AI by 2030. This plan, however, is less about pioneering novel technologies and more about strategically adapting existing ones to serve state economic, political and social objectives. While both China and the United States are actively pursuing AI technologies, their approaches differ significantly. The U.S. has traditionally led in fundamental AI research and innovation,…
