The best educational toys for kids

The best educational toys for kids

There are tons of building toys out there, from LEGO, to Tegu, to the classic wooden block. But one of my favorites (and my kid’s) are Magna-Tiles. These large, colorful construction toys come in a variety of sizes and shapes and click together, or to other surfaces, with the aid of powerful magnets. They can be combined to form simple shapes like cubes and pyramids, or arranged to make magnetic art on a garage door. Plus there are themed packs that can add windows, staircases or even functional cranes to the playsets. These are open-ended building toys that don’t have…

SoftBank acquires British AI chipmaker Graphcore

SoftBank acquires British AI chipmaker Graphcore

SoftBank has announced its acquisition of Graphcore, a leading British AI chipmaker. The deal will see Graphcore becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of SoftBank. This acquisition, reportedly valued at about $600 million, is not SoftBank’s first foray into the UK tech scene. In 2016, SoftBank controversially acquired British chip designer Arm in a much larger deal. However, the Graphcore purchase comes at a lower valuation than the total funding the company is said to have raised, which was around $700 million. Graphcore will continue to operate under its own name and maintain its headquarters in Bristol, UK. The company also retains…

MaskVD: Region Masking for Efficient Video Object Detection

MaskVD: Region Masking for Efficient Video Object Detection

arXiv:2407.12067v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Video tasks are compute-heavy and thus pose a challenge when deploying in real-time applications, particularly for tasks that require state-of-the-art Vision Transformers (ViTs). Several research efforts have tried to address this challenge by leveraging the fact that large portions of the video undergo very little change across frames, leading to redundant computations in frame-based video processing. In particular, some works leverage pixel or semantic differences across frames, however, this yields limited latency benefits with significantly increased memory overhead. This paper, in contrast, presents a strategy for masking regions in video frames that leverages the semantic…

The Great AI Witch Hunt: Reviewers Perception and (Mis)Conception of Generative AI in Research Writing

The Great AI Witch Hunt: Reviewers Perception and (Mis)Conception of Generative AI in Research Writing

arXiv:2407.12015v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Generative AI (GenAI) use in research writing is growing fast. However, it is unclear how peer reviewers recognize or misjudge AI-augmented manuscripts. To investigate the impact of AI-augmented writing on peer reviews, we conducted a snippet-based online survey with 17 peer reviewers from top-tier HCI conferences. Our findings indicate that while AI-augmented writing improves readability, language diversity, and informativeness, it often lacks research details and reflective insights from authors. Reviewers consistently struggled to distinguish between human and AI-augmented writing but their judgements remained consistent. They noted the loss of a "human touch" and subjective expressions…

Spotify, Stop Trying to Become a Social Media App

Spotify, Stop Trying to Become a Social Media App

Spotify’s decision to introduce comment sections under podcasts should surprise no one. For years now, apps have been ripping off each other’s most popular features. Where once apps adhered to their respective “things,” today they want to do it all: You can post Stories on YouTube, use AI search tools on Instagram, and shop for clothing on TikTok. And, as of last week, you can experience the thrill of seeing what random strangers think about your favorite podcasts on Spotify. In 2020, Spotify flirted with social tools, such as a Stories-esque feature for artists and a collaborative playlist feature for users.…

3 Takes on End-to-End For the MLOps Stack: Was It Worth It?

3 Takes on End-to-End For the MLOps Stack: Was It Worth It?

As machine learning (ML) drives innovation across industries, organizations seek ways to improve and optimize their ML workflows. End-to-end (E2E) MLOps platforms promise to simplify the complicated process of building, deploying, and maintaining ML models in production. However, while E2E MLOps platforms promise convenience and integration, they may not always align with an organization’s specific needs, existing infrastructure, or long-term goals. In some cases, assembling a custom MLOps stack using individual components may provide greater flexibility, control, and cost-effectiveness. To help you make this decision, I interviewed three MLOps experts who have worked with E2E platforms and custom stacks for…

I’ve raised my child between the US and New Zealand. I’ve learned important lessons about ‘fearless parenting’ from my Kiwi friends.

About a year before starting a family, my husband and I applied for permanent New Zealand residency because we wanted to raise our future child in the United States and New Zealand. We had previously visited Aotearoa, and we loved the landscapes, the political neutrality, the feelings of safety and security, and what seemed to be a simpler life — with less commercialism and consumerism. We divided our time because we had family in the US and wanted our child to know them.My husband and I found that our parenting styles were compatible with most Kiwi parents. However, Kiwis practiced…
