xAI Makes It Official — Raises $6B At $24B Valuation

xAI Makes It Official — Raises $6B At $24B Valuation

Elon Musk’s generative AI startup, xAI, officially announced its long-awaited fundraise — making it the second-most-valuable generative AI company in the world behind only competitor OpenAI. The $6 billion round included investment from Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Co., Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal and Kingdom Holding Co., among others. The new funding values the company at $24 billion post money, well behind OpenAI’s $86 billion valuation but well ahead of the $18 billion generative AI startup Anthropic is now valued at after its last raise. It was reported earlier this month that…

Achieving Dimension-Free Communication in Federated Learning via Zeroth-Order Optimization

Achieving Dimension-Free Communication in Federated Learning via Zeroth-Order Optimization

arXiv:2405.15861v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Federated Learning (FL) offers a promising framework for collaborative and privacy-preserving machine learning across distributed data sources. However, the substantial communication costs associated with FL pose a significant challenge to its efficiency. Specifically, in each communication round, the communication costs scale linearly with the model's dimension, which presents a formidable obstacle, especially in large model scenarios. Despite various communication efficient strategies, the intrinsic dimension-dependent communication cost remains a major bottleneck for current FL implementations. In this paper, we introduce a novel dimension-free communication strategy for FL, leveraging zero-order optimization techniques. We propose a new algorithm,…

Machines curate better data for themselves than a human would

Machines curate better data for themselves than a human would

Could machines curate better training data than humans? A new paper from Meta AI suggests the surprising answer may be yes.The researchers propose an automatic data curation method for self-supervised learning that selects high-quality, diverse, and balanced training examples from raw unlabeled datasets. The key result? Self-supervised models trained on these auto-curated datasets actually outperform models trained on manually labeled data. This finding could challenge the conventional wisdom about the necessity of human data curation and accelerate the development of self-supervised AI systems. But how exactly does the method work, and what are the broader implications? To find out, continue reading the…

Colossus processor gains flight heritage

Colossus processor gains flight heritage

SAN FRANCISCO – Space computing startup Colossus has gained flight heritage for Kestrel, a processor built to operate in orbit. Oakland, California-based Colossus, formerly called Zephyr Computing Systems, sent GPUs into low-Earth orbit in March on Loft Orbital’s YAM-6 mission. YAM-6 flew on the SpaceX Transporter-10 rideshare flight. “Everything is going well,” Jason Cerundolo, Colossus co-founder and CEO, told SpaceNews. “It’s ready for developers to start using it and satellite integrators to build it into their systems.” Loft Orbital satellites often serve as platforms for hardware and software technology demonstrations. For Colossus, though, Loft is a revenue-generating customer. Kestrel will…

Computer game in school made students better at detecting fake news

Computer game in school made students better at detecting fake news

A computer game helped upper secondary school students become better at distinguishing between reliable and misleading news. This is shown by a study conducted by researchers at Uppsala University and elsewhere. "This is an important step towards equipping young people with the tools they need to navigate in a world full of disinformation. We all need to become better at identifying manipulative strategies -- prebunking, as it is known -- since it is virtually impossible to discern deep fakes, for example, and other AI-generated disinformation with the naked eye," says Thomas Nygren, Professor of Education at Uppsala University. Along with…

Rethinking the Elementary Function Fusion for Single-Image Dehazing

Rethinking the Elementary Function Fusion for Single-Image Dehazing

arXiv:2405.15817v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper addresses the limitations of physical models in the current field of image dehazing by proposing an innovative dehazing network (CL2S). Building on the DM2F model, it identifies issues in its ablation experiments and replaces the original logarithmic function model with a trigonometric (sine) model. This substitution aims to better fit the complex and variable distribution of haze. The approach also integrates the atmospheric scattering model and other elementary functions to enhance dehazing performance. Experimental results demonstrate that CL2S achieves outstanding performance on multiple dehazing datasets, particularly in maintaining image details and color authenticity.…

OpenAI forms safety council as it trains latest artificial intelligence model

OpenAI says it is setting up a safety and security committee and has begun training a new AI model to supplant the GPT-4 system that underpins its ChatGPT chatbot. The San Francisco startup said in a blogpost on Tuesday that the committee will advise the full board on “critical safety and security decisions” for its projects and operations. The safety committee arrives as debate swirls around AI safety at the company, which was thrust into the spotlight after a researcher, Jan Leike, resigned and leveled criticism at OpenAI for letting safety “take a backseat to shiny products”. The OpenAI co-founder and chief…

It’s Chromebook’s Turn for an AI Injection

The first notable feature is Help Me Write, which works in any text box. Select text in any text box and right-click—you'll see a box next to the standard right-click context menu. You can ask Google's AI to rewrite the selected text, rephrase it in a specific way, or change the tone. I tried to use it on a few sentences in this story but did not like any of the suggestions it gave me, so your mileage may vary. Or maybe I'm a better writer than Google's AI. Who knows?Google's bringing the same generative AI wallpaper system you'll find…
