In the race to develop cutting-edge AI systems, data is the fuel that drives progress. From AI copilots to sophisticated AI-powered image recognition platforms, these AI systems rely on vast, diverse datasets to function at peak performance.
There is no lack of data and despite significant investments in data collection and analysis, organizations still face a major challenge: integrating different types of data – whether text, audio, or video – into a single, functional AI system.
Many enterprises rely on a variety of disparate systems to manage large multimodal datasets, but this disconnect can limit their ability to fully harness the data’s potential, resulting in inefficiencies and missed business opportunities.
According to Google’s Data and AI Trends Report 2024, 66% of organizations have more than half of their data in the dark. This dark data represents untapped insights that are not being leveraged by the organization.
To bridge this gap, California-based startup ApertureData, a leader in multimodal AI data management, offers ApertureDB, a unified data layer that combines the power of graph and vector databases with multimodal data management. The database enables seamless management of various data types, accelerating AI/ML workflows, and improving data access.
Recently, ApertureData announced $8.25 million in seed funding that will be used to enhance and scale ApertureDB. The round was led by TQ Ventures, with additional support from Westwave Capital, Interwoven Ventures, and several angel investors.
Andrew Marks, General Partner at TQ Ventures is confident in ApertureData’s ability to revolutionize the tech landscape by addressing the challenges of managing complex multimodal data. He believes their innovative approach will be foundational in supporting the rapid growth of generative and multimodal AI applications across diverse industries in the coming decade.
TQ Ventures is a New York-based venture capital firm focused on early-stage and growth-stage companies across the technology, finance, health, and gaming sectors.
Along with the funding announcement, ApertureData unveiled ApertureDB Cloud, a fully integrated cloud platform that allows businesses to centralize all their datasets in a single platform.
Multimodal artificial intelligence is the next step beyond traditional AI models. In response to growing demand, companies like Google with Gemini Pro and OpenAI with GPT-4o have developed advanced systems to meet industry needs. These models integrate and process multiple data types simultaneously, providing more comprehensive and accurate outputs.
“The increasing adoption of multimodal data in powering advanced AI experiences, including multimodal chatbots and computer vision systems, has created a significant market opportunity,” commented Vishakha Gupta, CEO of ApertureData. “As more companies look to leverage multimodality, the demand for efficient management solutions like ApertureDB is expected to grow.”
ApertureData was established in 2018 by Vishakha Gupta (CEO) and Luis Remis (CTO). driven by their vision to create a unified data layer that can efficiently manage all tasks related to multimodal AI in one comprehensive solution.
During their experience at Intel Labs, Gupta and Remis realized a need for a solution that could efficiently manage complex visual data, which ultimately inspired them to develop Aperture DB.
ApertureData aims to distinguish itself from other AI databases by specializing in multimodal data. The platform can help users explore complex relationships with their datasets, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of diverse data types and facilitating the use of their preferred AI frameworks for tailored applications.
The startup claims that by streamlining disparate processes through one unified database, ApertureDB is 35x faster than existing solutions at mobilizing multimodal datasets. It is also two to four times faster than other open-source vector databases.
According to the startup, the new funding will support the scaling of current production deployments. In addition, the funds will be allocated to enhance the user experience by improving the sandbox environment and refining documentation. The company also intends to increase integrations and expand its outreach efforts to capitalize on the rapidly growing multimodal AI market.
