Starting in May 2025, most household appliances sold in the EU must have a standby power consumption of less than 300mW, a significant reduction from the current 500mW limit. To help meet these stringent standards, Power Integrations (PI) has released a new application guide (AN-109) for designing small open-frame power supplies. This guide features PI’s LinkSwitch-XT2SR non-isolated flyback switching IC, which boasts up to 90% efficiency and a no-load power consumption of less than 5mW.

As IC power consumption inevitably increases to support more powerful functions, the LinkSwitch-XT2SR ensures overall system performance at a limited power level of 250mW. This means that only 50mW is available for other components within the total standby power budget, necessitating extremely low standby power consumption from these components to meet the new EU standards.

Among these key passive components, aluminum electrolytic capacitors play a critical role, and their standby power consumption must be further reduced. This necessitates a reduction in the leakage current of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. YMIN aluminum electrolytic capacitors excel in low leakage current performance:

  1. Ultra-low Power Consumption: YMIN capacitors have low leakage and static power consumption in standby mode.
  2. Long-term Stability: YMIN capacitors maintain low leakage and stability over long periods of operation.
  3. Wide Temperature Range: YMIN capacitors retain low leakage across a wide temperature range from -50°C to 150°C.
  4. Extended Lifespan: YMIN capacitors have minimal impact on battery life, allowing for long-term storage while maintaining performance for up to 24 months.
  5. Custom Solutions: In addition to hybrid solid-liquid capacitors, YMIN can customize low-power products according to customer requirements.

YMIN capacitors are characterized by low leakage current and low power consumption, making them suitable for a variety of battery-related applications, such as new energy vehicles, small household appliances, IoT-enabled smart home and building automation, smart locks, and sensor-based environmental control systems. They are an ideal choice for low-power capacitors.

For example, the YMIN’s NPT and VGY series are small in size, with a height of 5.7-5.8mm and a diameter of 6.3mm, allowing for further integration of electronic components. They support high voltages up to 6.3V, have a capacitance of 220μF, and maintain long-term low leakage characteristics. With their wide temperature advantage, they can maintain performance for 24 months during long-term storage, making them essential choices for modern small capacitors.
