Robotic system feeds people with severe mobility limitations

Robotic system feeds people with severe mobility limitations

Cornell researchers have developed a robotic feeding system that uses computer vision, machine learning and multimodal sensing to safely feed people with severe mobility limitations, including those with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. "Feeding individuals with severe mobility limitations with a robot is difficult, as many cannot lean forward and require food to be placed directly inside their mouths," said Tapomayukh "Tapo" Bhattacharjee, assistant professor of computer science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science and senior developer behind the system. "The challenge intensifies when feeding individuals with additional complex medical conditions."…

A better way to control shape-shifting soft robots

A better way to control shape-shifting soft robots

Imagine a slime-like robot that can seamlessly change its shape to squeeze through narrow spaces, which could be deployed inside the human body to remove an unwanted item. While such a robot does not yet exist outside a laboratory, researchers are working to develop reconfigurable soft robots for applications in health care, wearable devices, and industrial systems. But how can one control a squishy robot that doesn't have joints, limbs, or fingers that can be manipulated, and instead can drastically alter its entire shape at will? MIT researchers are working to answer that question. They developed a control algorithm that…

The second New England RLHF Hackers Hackathon

The second New England RLHF Hackers Hackathon

Rekindling the spirit of collaboration, the New England RLHF Hackers (NERH) hosted their second hackathon at Brown University on October 8th, 2023. Stepping up from the success of our inaugural hackathon, this event was fueled by the same enthusiasm but with a fresh purpose: to brainstorm and formulate solutions to a myriad of existing challenges in reinforcement learning from human feedback. The NERH group is mainly comprised of collaborators and contributors from EleutherAI, with several members being integral parts of the Eleuther workforce. In light of our shared vision for a more transparent and inclusive RLHF community, we've decided to…

Onum raises $28M to help organizations extract their most valuable data in real time – SiliconANGLE

Big data observability startup Onum said today it’s ready to accelerate its ambitious growth plans after closing on a $28 million early-stage round of funding. The Series A round was led by one of Europe’s top specialist business-to-business software investors, Dawn Capital, and saw participation from Kibo Ventures and Insight Partners. It comes less than a year after the company’s official launch in 2023. The startup, officially known as Signalit Technology S.L., has built what it says is a more efficient and intelligent data observability platform that’s designed to give companies more control over their data, ensuring real-time observation and orchestration,…

When consumers would prefer a chatbot over a person

When consumers would prefer a chatbot over a person

Actually, sometimes consumers don't want to talk to a real person when they're shopping online, a new study suggests. In fact, what they really want is a chatbot that makes it clear that it is not human at all. In a new study, researchers at The Ohio State University found that people preferred interacting with chatbots when they felt embarrassed about what they were buying online -- items like antidiarrheal medicine or, for some people, skin care products. "In general, research shows people would rather interact with a human customer service agent than a chatbot," said Jianna Jin, who led…

Llemma: An Open Language Model For Mathematics

Llemma: An Open Language Model For Mathematics

ArXiv | Models | Data | Code | Blog | Sample Explorer Today we release Llemma: 7 billion and 34 billion parameter language models for mathematics. The Llemma models were initialized with Code Llama weights, then trained on the Proof-Pile II, a 55 billion token dataset of mathematical and scientific documents. The resulting models show improved mathematical capabilities, and can be adapted to various tasks through prompting or additional fine-tuning. Llemma models show strong performance on benchmarks that test a model's ability to solve mathematical problems without external tools. For example, here is a Llemma 34B solution to a MATH…

Starburst to release its Iceberg-based lakehouse as a managed service – SiliconANGLE

Starburst Data Inc., which sells a commercial version of the open-source Trino distributed query engine, today announced a fully managed Icehouse data lake on its Galaxy cloud. Icehouse is an open-source lakehouse that combines Trino and Apache Iceberg storage. A lakehouse is a new type of data architecture that combines the flexibility of data lakes with the performance of data warehouses. Iceberg is an open-source data table format designed for data warehouses and data lakes that supports SQL tables on large amounts of storage. Iceberg’s schema evolution feature allows the data structure of tables to change over time. It keeps…
